having been given to them to study also the prophecies, in which all these things were foretold as going to happen, having taught them, and when they saw him ascending into heaven and believed, and received power sent to them from there by him, and went to every race of men, they taught these things and were called apostles. But that the prophetic spirit might show us that he who suffers these things has an indescribable generation and reigns over his enemies, it spoke thus: Who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth, from their iniquities he has come to death. And I will give the wicked for his burial, and the rich for his death, because he did no iniquity, nor was guile found in his mouth. and the Lord desires to cleanse him from his wound. If you give an offering for sin, your soul shall see a long-lived seed. And the Lord desires to take away his soul from travail, to show him light and to form him with understanding, to justify the just one who serves many well, and he himself will bear our sins. Therefore he will inherit many, and will divide the spoils of the strong, because his soul was delivered to death, and he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bore the sins of many, and was delivered up for their iniquities. But as he was also about to ascend into heaven, as was prophesied, listen. It was said thus: Lift up the gates of the heavens, be opened, that the king of glory may enter. Who is this king of glory? The Lord strong and the Lord mighty. But as he is also about to come from heaven with glory, listen also to the things spoken to this effect through Jeremiah the prophet. And they are these: Behold, as a son of man he comes upon the clouds of heaven, and his angels with him. Since, therefore, we show that all things that have already happened were proclaimed by the prophets before they happened, it is necessary to have faith also concerning those things similarly prophesied, but which are yet to happen, that they will certainly happen. For in the way that the things already proclaimed and unknown have come to pass, in the same way also the remaining things, even if they are unknown and disbelieved, will come to pass. For the prophets proclaimed two advents of him; one, the one that has already happened, as of a dishonored and suffering man, and the second, when he is proclaimed to come with glory from the heavens with his angelic host, when he will also raise the bodies of all men who have ever lived, and
