testified to, and how great is the distance between the one testified to and the one testifying. And having done this, and shown His incomparable excellence, thus with freedom he then proceeds to the remaining argument; and if there was anything amiss lurking in the minds of the more foolish, having removed this from the midst with precision, thus to all with ease then and without hindrance he next sends forth the word of teaching. Let us pray, then, that along with the revelation of these thoughts and the orthodoxy of the doctrines, we may also have a pure life and a shining conduct. Since there is no benefit in these things, if good works are not present with us. For even if we have all faith and the understanding of the Scriptures, but are destitute and naked of the protection that comes from life, nothing prevents us from being carried away to the fire of Gehenna, and being burned for eternity by the unquenchable flame. For just as those who have done good will rise to eternal life, so those who have dared the contrary, to eternal punishment that never has an end. Therefore let us show all diligence, so as not to corrupt the gain that comes to us from right faith by the worthlessness of our works, but having been well-pleasing in this also, to see Christ with boldness. For there could never be anything equal to this blessedness. May it be that all, having obtained the things spoken of, do all things to the glory of God, to whom be glory, together with the only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen. 59.61 HOMILY 7. He was the true Light, which lightens every man that comes into the world. 1. For this reason, O much-desired children, we feast you on the thoughts from the Scriptures in parts, and we do not pour everything out all at once, so that the keeping of what is always laid down for you may be easy. For in building, the one who places other stones before the first ones have set, weaves a whole wall that is unsound and easily thrown down; but the one who waits for the mortar to set first, and so adds what is lacking little by little, completes the whole house with security, making it not short-lived, nor easily demolished, but firm. Let us too imitate these builders, and in the same way build up your souls. For we fear lest, while the first foundation is newly laid, the addition of the second set of doctrines might also damage the first, as the mind is not sufficient to grasp all things at once. What then is it that has been read to us today? He was the true Light, which lightens every man that comes into the 59.62 world. For since above when discoursing concerning John he said, that he came, That he might bear witness of the Light, and that he was now sent; lest anyone hearing these things, on account of the recent coming of the one testifying, should also get some such suspicion concerning the one testified to, he led up the thought, and sent it forth to the existence which is beyond all beginning, which nowhere ends nor stands still. And how is it possible, he says, for Him being a Son to have this? We are discoursing about God, and you ask how? And are you not afraid, nor do you shudder? Then if someone should ask you: But how will our souls have endless life and our bodies after these things? you would laugh at the question, as it is not for the human mind to seek such things, but that one must only believe and not meddle with what has been said, having sufficient proof of what was spoken in the power of Him who spoke it; but if we should say that He who made souls and bodies, and is incomparably superior to all creation, is without beginning, will you demand the manner of it from us? And who would say that these things are of a settled 59.63 soul? or of a sound mind? You have heard, that He was the true Light. Why do you contentiously strive in vain and to no purpose to outstrip with your reason this infinite life? For it is not possible. Why do you seek the unseekable? Why are you curious about the incomprehensible? Why do you search the unsearchable? Consider the very root of the sun's rays; but you will not be able, and yet you are not indignant, nor do you complain at your weakness. How then in greater things have you become audacious and
