the sun of righteousness finds the rising soul awake, and certainly also praying, that it may not enter into temptation; for it also hastens to say, "I have kept watch, and am become like a sparrow dwelling alone on the housetop." 375 '31, 18 She has tasted that it is good to work and her lamp is not put out all the night. A lamp is a pure mind filled with spiritual contemplation. 376 '31, 19 She stretches out her hands to profitable things; and supports her arms on a spindle. A spindle is a pure mind weaving virtue with virtue and dogma with dogma, or the uttered word drawing spiritual contemplation from the mind. 377 '31, 21 Her husband does not take thought for those in the house, whenever he is delayed; for all who are with her are clothed. The mind would not go forth nor be in the contemplation of incorporeal things without having corrected its internal affairs; for the disturbance of its own household is accustomed to turn it back to the things from which it has come out. But having acquired dispassion, it will tarry in contemplation and will not take thought for those in the house; for passion is clothed with gentleness and humility, and desire with self-control and continence. 378 '31, 22 She made double cloaks for her husband; and for herself garments of fine linen and purple. The principles of earth and sea are the garments of a rational soul, of fine linen and purple. And another will say that the contemplation of things that have come into being and the contemplation of the holy trinity are the garment of a pure mind, of fine linen and purple. 379 '31, 24 She made fine linen cloths and sold them, and girdles to the Canaanites. The linen sheet that appeared on the rooftop to Peter was a symbol of the perceptible world; for the animals contained in it signified the different characters of men, cleansed by the cross of Christ. If, then, the one linen sheet signified this world, perhaps the multiple linen sheets contain the contemplation concerning different worlds, which the pure soul, having contemplated, also imparted to others. But if the Canaanites are interpreted as "humble," rightly she did not sell the linen cloths to those humble in mind, but the linen cloths to the pure, and the girdles to the Canaanites, which are symbols of the practical life, binding fast the passionate part of the soul. 380 '31, 27.1 The ways of her household are secure. If the devil is "king of all that is in the waters" and "finds no rest through waterless places," rightly are the ways of the pure soul said to be secure. 381 '31, 27.2 She has not eaten the bread of idleness. They say the bread of idleness is wickedness. 382 '31, 30.2-3 For a sensible woman is blessed; but let her praise the fear of the Lord. If "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," rightly does the soul that has obtained wisdom praise the fear of the Lord, which has become for it the cause of such knowledge. 383 11, 29 He who is not kind to his own household will inherit the wind, and the foolish will serve the wise. This is an encomium of the fool. Every wicked man is a fool, every fool a slave, therefore every wicked man is a slave. 384 14, 20 Friends will hate poor friends, but the friends of the rich are many. For the holy angels love the saints on account of their virtues; but they hate sinners on account of their poverty.

ἀνισταμένην ψυχὴν ἐγρηγορυῖαν εὑρίσκει ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης ἥλιος, πάντως δὲ καὶ προσευ-χομένην, ἵνα μὴ ἐμπέσῃ εἰς πειρασμόν· σπεύδει γὰρ καὶ αὐτὴ εἰπεῖν τὸ «ἠγρύπνησα καὶ ἐγενόμην ὡς στρουθίον μονάζον ἐπὶ δώματι». 375 '31, 18 ἐγεύσατο δὲ ὅτι καλόν ἐστιν τὸ ἐργάζεσθαι καὶ οὐκ ἀποσβέννυται ὅλην τὴν νύκτα ὁ λύχνος αὐτῆσ Λύχνος ἐστὶ νοῦς καθαρὸς πνευματικῆς θεωρίας πεπληρωμένος. 376 '31, 19 τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῆς ἐκτείνει ἐπὶ τὰ συμφέροντα· τοὺς δὲ πήχεις αὐτῆς ἐρείδει εἰς ἄτρακτον Ἄτρακτός ἐστι νοῦς καθαρὸς συμπλέκων ἀρετὴν ἀρετῇ καὶ δόγματι δόγμα ἢ λόγος προφορικὸς ἕλκων ἀπὸ τοῦ νοῦ πνευματικὴν θεωρίαν. 377 '31, 21 οὐ φροντίζει τῶν ἐν οἴκῳ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, ὅτανπου χρονίζῃ· πάντες γὰρ οἱ παρ' αὐτῆς ἐνδιδύσκονται Οὐκ ἂν προέλθοι ὁ νοῦς οὐδ' ἐν τῇ θεωρίᾳ γένοιτο τῶν ἀσωμάτων μὴ τὰ ἔνδον διορθωσάμενος· ἡ γὰρ ταραχὴ τῶν οἰκείων ἐπιστρέφειν αὐτὸν εἴωθε πρὸς τὰ ἀφ' ὧν ἐξελήλυθεν. Ἀπάθειαν δὲ κτησάμενος χρονίσει τε ἐν τῇ θεωρίᾳ καὶ οὐ φροντίσει τῶν ἐν οἴκῳ· ἐνδέδυται γὰρ θυμὸς μὲν πραΰτητα καὶ ταπεινοφροσύνην, ἐπιθυμία δὲ σωφροσύνην καὶ ἐγκράτειαν. 378 '31, 22 δισσὰς χλαίνας ἐποίησεν τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς· ἐκ δὲ βύσσου καὶ πορφύρας ἑαυτῇ ἐνδύματα Γῆς καὶ θαλάσσης οἱ λόγοι ἐνδύματά εἰσι ψυχῆς λογικῆς ἐκ βύσσου καὶ πορφύρας. Ἄλλος δέ τις ἐρεῖ τὴν θεωρίαν τῶν γεγονότων καὶ τὴν θεωρίαν τῆς ἁγίας τριάδος ἔνδυμα εἶναι νοῦ καθαροῦ ἐκ βύσσου καὶ πορφύρας. 379 '31, 24 σινδόνας ἐποίησεν καὶ ἀπέδοτο, περιζώματα δὲ τοῖς Χαναναίοισ Ἡ φανεῖσα σινδὼν ἐπὶ τοῦ δώματος Πέτρῳ σύμβολον ἦν τοῦ κόσμου τοῦ αἰσθητοῦ· τὰ γὰρ ἐν αὐτῇ περιεχόμενα ζῷα τὰ διάφορα ἤθη τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐδήλου καθαρισθέντα τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Εἰ οὖν ἡ μία σινδὼν τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἐσήμαινεν, μήποτε αἱ πλείους σινδόνες τὴν περὶ διαφόρων κόσμων περιέχουσι θεωρίαν, ἣν ἡ καθαρὰ ψυχὴ θεωρήσασα καὶ ἄλλοις μετέδωκεν. Εἰ δὲ οἱ Χαναναῖοι ταπεινοὶ ἑρμηνεύονται, καλῶς οὐ τοῖς ταπεινοῖς τὴν διάνοιαν ἀπέδοτο τὰς σινδόνας, ἀλλὰ καθαροῖς μὲν τὰς σινδόνας, τοῖς δὲ Χαναναίοις περιζώματα, ἅπερ πρακτικῆς ἐστι σύμβολα τὸ παθητικὸν μέρος τῆς ψυχῆς περισφίγγοντα. 380 '31, 27.1 στεγναὶ διατριβαὶ οἴκων αὐτῆσ Εἰ ὁ διάβολος «βασιλεύς» ἐστι «πάντων τῶν ἐν τοῖς ὕδασι» καὶ «δι' ἀνύδρων τόπων ἀνάπαυσιν οὐχ εὑρίσκει», καλῶς τῆς καθαρᾶς ψυχῆς στεγναὶ αἱ διατριβαὶ λέγονται εἶναι. 381 '31, 27.2 σῖτα δὲ ὀκνηρὰ οὐκ ἔφαγεν Σῖτα ὀκνηρὰ τὰς κακίας εἶναί φασιν. 382 '31, 30.2-3 γυνὴ γὰρ συνετὴ εὐλογεῖται· φόβον δὲ κυρίου αὕτη αἰνείτω Εἰ «ἀρχὴ σοφίας φόβος κυρίου», δικαίως ἡ τυχοῦσα τῆς σοφίας ψυχὴ αἰνεῖ τὸν φόβον κυρίου, ὅστις γέγονεν αὐτῇ τῆς τοιαύτης γνώσεως πρόξενος. 383 11, 29 ὁ μὴ συμπεριφερόμενος τῷ ἑαυτοῦ οἴκῳ κληρονομήσει ἄνεμον, δουλεύσει δὲ ἄφρων φρονίμῳ Ἐγκώμιον τοῦτο τοῦ ἄφρονος. Πᾶς φαῦλος ἄφρων, πᾶς ἄφρων δοῦλος, πᾶς ἄρα φαῦλος δοῦλος. 384 14, 20 φίλοι μισήσουσιν φίλους πτωχούς, φίλοι δὲ πλουσίων πολλοί Ἀγαπῶσι γὰρ οἱ ἅγιοι ἄγγελοι τοὺς ἁγίους διὰ τὰς ἀρετάς· τοὺς δὲ ἁμαρτωλοὺς μισοῦσι διὰ τὴν τούτων πενίαν.
