working the collapse of things that have been shaken, and subsidence earthquakes are those that cause the land above to settle into cavities, and breaker earthquakes are those that tear open swallow-holes and chasms as the land leaps apart. Furthermore, of the breaker earthquakes, some throw up winds, others liquids and mud, others roarings, sometimes with a quake, sometimes even without one, the compressed and shifting wind makes a roaring and a noise as of some rocks, it is likely, breaking under the earth. They happen for the most part in spring or in autumn, and in calm weather rather than when winds are blowing, around the rising of the Pleiades and Arcturus. 54 One might represent these things by looking at natural concepts; nevertheless all things happen by the providence and oversight of Justice. For not by chance, since this universe is held together by natural laws, but it is governed by the providence of God and by a reason beyond chance. Whence not only do the earthquakes themselves harm those against whom they happen, but indeed they also become messengers of no small evils for others far away, separated by place and time. That the account concerning them will thus and not otherwise escape a chance occurrence, it is possible to know from what is laid out below. For Vicellius the Roman himself, from the verses of Tages, about whom Apuleius also later narrated in a broad and free-footed discourse, says these things in these very words, according to interpretation. 5558t THE SEISMOLOGION OF VICELLIUS The Sun in Aries. If an earthquake occurs in Asia, it threatens evil for Coele-Syria and Palestine and Judea, but in Europe, for the Britains, Gauls, Germanies, Bastarnae. And the kings will march against their enemies, but not successfully; for with their armies diminished, the generals will withdraw without success. And in the east, the harm to men will be greater than to women, because Aries is a male sign. The Sun in Taurus. If a tremor should happen to occur, in upper Asia, for the Persians and the Ethiopians along the Indus river and for the coast of the lesser Cyclades and for the island of Cyprus, a pestilential destruction will be at hand, so that even the beasts of burden of the said regions will perish; a severe and pestilential conflagration and uncontrollable diversions of rivers will happen to them, and in the summer a failure of river waters. And for the females of living creatures, both rational and irrational, the harm will be greater, because Taurus is a female sign. The Sun in Gemini. If any movement of the earth whatsoever should occur, in greater Asia, for Hyrcania, both Armenias, Amadiane, and in Libya, or rather Europe, because Libya is part of Europe, for Marmarica and Nasamonitis and simply the dry land extending to the great Syrtes, an extreme famine will arise, so that out of necessity the populace will rise up against the notables of the regions to expel them. And from the disasters no one will be faithful to anyone, nor mothers to children. And falls and disappearances of houses, and severe fires. In addition to these things, a most cruel tyrant will disturb the laws, so as not even to spare the sacred places. The disasters will fall more upon the males of living creatures, and especially the rational ones, because Gemini is a male and anthropomorphic sign. 56 The Sun in Cancer. If a tremor should happen to occur in any place whatsoever, in upper Asia the regions neighboring Persia will be disturbed, and pestilential diseases will fall upon the bodies of the eminent among them, so that their cities will become devoid of rulers. And those who will take charge of affairs after them, by a vote of the people and of the nobles themselves, will drag the children away from their parents, and will sell them far away. And in lower Asia, Bithynia and all of Phrygia, and of Europe, Colchis, which they now call Lazica, and of Libya, Africa as far as Numidia will consort with the same evils. And eclipses
