will be justified; but rather, knowledge even condemns, when it is without action and right deeds. Therefore, that we may flee condemnation, let us pursue action, that we may obtain the promised good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ.

HOMILY 6. For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient unto

death, even the death of the cross. 1. Our Lord Jesus Christ, when exhorting his disciples to great things, sets forth himself as an example, and the Father, and the prophets, as when he says: For so they did to the prophets who were before you; and again, If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; and, Learn from me, for I am meek; and again, Be merciful, as your Father who is in heaven. This the blessed Paul also does. For when exhorting them to humility, he brought Christ into the midst; and not only here, but also when he discourses concerning love for the poor, he speaks somewhat thus: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor. For nothing so rouses the great and philosophic soul to the 62.218 practice of good things, as to learn that in this it is made like God. For what is equal to this for exhortation? Nothing. Which indeed Paul knowing, when exhorting them to humility, first besought them, he made supplication; then he also said to shame them, That you stand in one spirit; he said, That to them it is an evidence of perdition, but to you of salvation. And then he adds this: For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant. Pay attention, I beseech you, and rouse yourselves. For just as a sharp sword sharpened on both sides, wherever it may fall, even into ten thousand phalanxes, easily cuts them through and destroys them, because it is sharp on all sides, and nothing can withstand its edge; so indeed are the words of the Spirit. For by these words he overthrew the followers of Arius of Alexandria, and of Paul of Samosata, and of Marcellus of Galatia, and of Sabellius the Libyan, and of Marcion of Pontus, and of Valentinus, and of Manes, and of Apollinaris of Laodicea, and of Photinus, and of Sophronius, and simply all 62.219 the heresies. As you are about to see such a sight, and so many phalanxes falling with one blow, be roused, so that the pleasure of the spectacle may not pass you by. For if in the chariot contests in the horse races there is nothing so delightful as when someone, striking whole chariots with their drivers, overthrows them, and having thrown many four-horse teams on their backs with their standing charioteers, he alone drives past to the turning-post and the end of the contest, and much applause and shouting from all sides goes up to heaven; and he, as if winged by that joy and applause, thus runs the whole course with his horses; how much more pleasure will there not be here, when we overthrow whole systems of heresies and diabolical workshops with their own charioteers by the

ΟΜΙΛΙΑ ΣΤʹ. Τοῦτο γὰρ φρονείσθω ἐν ὑμῖν, ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ· ὃς ἐν μορφῇ Θεοῦ ὑπάρχων, οὐχ ἁρ παγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα Θεῷ, ἀλλ' ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσε, μορφὴν δούλου λαβὼν, ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος, καὶ σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος, ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν, γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι

θανάτου, θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ. αʹ. Ὁ Κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς πρὸς τὰ μεγάλα προτρέπων τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ μαθητὰς, ἑαυτὸν ὑπόδειγμα τίθησι, καὶ τὸν Πατέρα, καὶ τοὺς προφήτας, ὡς ὅταν λέγῃ· Οὕτω γὰρ ἐποίησαν τοῖς προφήταις τοῖς πρὸ ὑμῶν· καὶ πάλιν, Εἰ ἐμὲ ἐδίωξαν, καὶ ὑμᾶς διώξουσι· καὶ, Μάθετε ἀπ' ἐμοῦ, ὅτι πρᾶός εἰμι· καὶ πάλιν, Οἰκτίρμονες γίνεσθε, ὡς ὁ Πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. Καθάπερ γάρ τις μάχαιρα ὀξεῖα ἑκατέρωθεν ἠκονημένη, ὅπουπερ ἂν ἐμπέσῃ κἂν εἰς μυρίας φάλαγγας, εὐκόλως αὐτὰς διακόπτει καὶ ἀφανίζει, τῷ πάντοθεν ὀξεῖαν εἶναι, καὶ μηδὲν τὴν ἀκμὴν αὐτῆς φέρειν· οὕτω δὴ καὶ τὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος ῥήματα. ∆ιὰ γὰρ τούτων τῶν ῥημάτων καὶ τοὺς Ἀρείου τοῦ Ἀλεξανδρέως, καὶ τοὺς Παύλου τοῦ Σαμοσατέως, καὶ τοὺς Μαρκέλλου τοῦ Γαλάτου, καὶ τοὺς Σαβελλίου τοῦ Λίβυος, καὶ τοὺς Μαρκίωνος τοῦ Ποντικοῦ, καὶ τοὺς Οὐαλεντίνου, καὶ τοὺς τοῦ Μάνεντος καὶ τοὺς τοῦ Λαοδικέως Ἀπολλιναρίου, καὶ Φωτεινοῦ, καὶ Σωφρονίου, καὶ πάσας ἁπλῶς τὰς 62.219 αἱρέσεις κατέβαλεν. Ὡς οὖν τοιαύτην ὀψόμενοι θέαν, καὶ μιᾷ πληγῇ τοσαύτας φάλαγγας πιπτούσας, διεγέρθητε, ὥστε μὴ τοῦ θεάματος παραδραμεῖν ὑμᾶς τὴν τέρψιν. Εἰ γὰρ ἐπὶ τῶν ἁμιλλητηρίων ἁρμάτων ἐν ταῖς τῶν ἵππων ἁμίλλαις οὐδὲν οὕτως ἐστὶ τερπνὸν, ὡς ὅταν ὁλόκληρα ἅρματα μετὰ τῶν ἡνιόχων κρούσας τις καταβάλῃ, καὶ πολλὰ τέθριππα ὕπτια ῥίψας μετὰ τῶν ἐφεστώτων ἡνιόχων παρελάσῃ μόνος πρὸς τὴν νύσσαν καὶ τὸ τέρμα τοῦ ἀγῶνος, καὶ πολὺς πάντοθεν ὁ κρότος καὶ ἡ κραυγὴ πρὸς οὐρανὸν ἀνίῃ· ὁ δὲ, ὥσπερ πτηνὸς ὑπὸ τῆς χαρᾶς ἐκείνης καὶ τῶν κρότων, οὕτω τὸ στάδιον ἅπαν διατρέχῃ μετὰ τῶν ἵππων· πόσῳ μᾶλλον ἐνταῦθα οὐχὶ πλείων ἔσται ἡ ἡδονὴ, ὅταν ὁλοκλήρων αἱρέσεων συστήματα καὶ διαβολικὰ ἐργαστήρια μετὰ τῶν ἡνιόχων αὐτῶν καταβάλωμεν τῇ τοῦ
