they petition Valens through Euphilas, their Arian-minded bishop, who had formerly associated under Constantius with Eudoxius and Acacius the Arians. He taught the Goths to be Arians. The Goths were divided into two; Athanaric was general of the one part, and Fritigern of the other; the latter, having been defeated and having received help from Valens, conquered the forces of Athanaric; and to gratify Valens, he taught the Goths to be Arians even more. Years of the world, 5870. Years of the divine incarnation, 370. Emperor of the Romans, Valens, year 3. 3. King of the Persians, Sapor, year 5. 1. Bishop of Rome, Damasus, year 28. 26. Bishop of Constantinople, Demophilus, year 12. 8. Bishop of Jerusalem, Cyril, year 35. 12. Bishop of Alexandria, Lucius, year 6. 5. Bishop of Antioch, Meletius, year 25. 6. In this year, the Goths, uniting again, went out into the 65 land of the Romans and devastated many provinces, Scythia, Moesia, Thrace, Macedonia, and Achaia, and all of Greece, about twenty provinces. And at this time there were seen in the air in the clouds armed men formed. And there was born in Antioch a child, complete in its other parts, but having one eye in the middle of its forehead, and four hands and four feet and a beard. But Valens, while staying in Antioch and learning about the Goths, came to Constantinople, and the Byzantines insulted him as unmanly and a shirker of battle. And Isaac, the holy monk, taking hold of the bridle of the horse of Valens as he was going out for the last time to war against the Goths, said to him: "Where are you going, O Emperor, warring against God and having God as your adversary?" At which, being enraged, he handed him over to a guard, threatening him with death if he should return, as Ahab once did to Micaiah. And after his departure, some of those around him confessed that by his commission divination had been made concerning his impending campaign in the war. In which, Valens, having engaged with the Goths and been defeated, fled with a few men into a small house. And the barbarians, having caught up with him and set fire to the house, burned everyone inside, not knowing who was in it. And they say that the divine Isaac, in his prison, perceived the stench of Valens being burned by a divine gift and purity of soul, and foretold his destruction to his companions, before those arrived who reported from the war what had been done. After the defeat and the death by fire of Valens, the Goths, elated by the victory, terribly ravaged the suburbs of Constantinople. And Mavia, the queen of the Saracens, having sent an army of Saracens, and Domnica, the wife of Valens, leading out the people of the city, pursued the barbarians. And things being so disposed, Gratian the Augustus, knowing this, coming down into Pannonia as if to help in place of Valens, invested 66 Theodosius as Augustus and proclaimed him emperor and sent him to the war against the Goths. And Trajan the patrician says in his history that the Scythians are locally called Goths. Dorotheus, one of the saints, was martyred under the impious Valens in Alexandria, having been given over to wild beasts in the Cynegium by the Arians. Years of the world, 5871. Years of the divine incarnation, 371. Emperor of the Romans, Theodosius, year 16. 1. King of the Persians, Sapor, year 5. 2. Bishop of Rome, Damasus, year 28. 27. Bishop of Constantinople, Demophilus, year 12. 9. Bishop of Jerusalem, Cyril, year 35. 13. Bishop of Alexandria, Lucius, year 6. 6. Bishop of Antioch, Meletius, year 25. 7. In this year Gratian the emperor took Theodosius as a partner in the empire, an Iberian from the West by race, and someone noble and wonderful in matters of war. He immediately conquered the barbarians in Thrace by force, being pious and orthodox. And Gratian and Valentinian by law recalled the exiled bishops, and the
