And now I bend the knee of my heart, praying for your goodness. I have sinned, Lord, I have sinned, and I know my transgressions; but I ask, praying to you: forgive me, Lord, forgive me, and do not destroy me with my transgressions, nor, being angry forever, reserve evils for me, nor condemn me to the lowest parts of the earth; for you are the God of those who repent, and in me you will show all your goodness, for being unworthy you will save me according to your great mercy; and I will praise you continually all the days of my life, for all the host of heaven sings your praise, and yours is the glory forever; amen.” And the Lord heard his voice and had mercy on him; and a flame of fire came around him, and all the iron about him melted, and the Lord healed Manasseh from his affliction and returned him to Jerusalem to his kingdom. And Manasseh knew that the Lord God is himself God alone, and he served the Lord God alone with all his heart and with all his soul all the days of his life, and was counted righteous. And he removed the foreign gods and the carved image from the house of the Lord, and all the altars which he had built on the mountain of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city; and he restored the altar of the Lord, and sacrificed upon it a sacrifice of salvation and praise, and Manasseh told Judah to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. And he slept in peace with his fathers; and Amon his son reigned in his place, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord according to all that his father had done at first, and provoked the Lord his God.” You have heard, our beloved children, how the Lord God, after briefly punishing the one who was given to idols and had murdered many innocent people, received him when he repented, and having forgiven his trespasses, returned him to his kingdom; for not only does he forgive those who repent, but he also restores them to their former dignity. There is no sin greater than idolatry, for it is impiety toward God; but nevertheless, even this is forgiven through genuine repentance. But if anyone sins defiantly, testing God as if he would not pursue the wicked, such a one will not have forgiveness, even if he says to himself: “May it go well with me, for
