being barred from sin and change. But he also rose and 1.231 entered through closed doors, in order to show the solid to be subtle, the very being with flesh and bones. For after entering he showed his hands and feet and pierced side, bones and sinews and the rest, so that what was seen would not be a phantom; and he made the promise of our faith and hope, perfecting all things through himself. And he ate with them not in appearance but in truth, and training them he taught them to proclaim the kingdom of heaven in truth, signifying the great and chiefest thing * to his disciples and saying "make disciples of the nations," that is, change the nations from evil to truth, from heresies to one unity, "baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," into the Lordly designation of the Trinity, the holy and royal seal, in order to show from the name that there is no alteration of the one unity. For where those being baptized are commanded by him to be sealed in the name of the Father, the doxology is sure; "in the name of the Son," the invocation is not lacking; "in the name of the Holy Spirit," the bond is not divided nor alienated, having the seal of the one Godhead. 4. And he was taken up into heaven in that same body and soul and mind, having united them into one unity and having made one spiritual and divine hypostasis, he sat at the right hand of the Father, having sent preachers into the whole inhabited world, Simon Peter, Andrew his brother, James and John the sons of Zebedee whom he had long since chosen, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas 1.232 and Judas and Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot; For Judas Iscariot, although he was formerly numbered among the twelve, having become a traitor was cut off from the holy list of the apostles. And he also sent seventy-two others to preach, of whom were the seven appointed over the widows, Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas, and before these, Matthias who was numbered with the apostles in place of Judas; and after these seven and Matthias who was before them, Mark and Luke, Justus, Barnabas and Apelles, Rufus, Niger and the rest of the seventy-two. And after all these and with them he chose Paul the holy apostle by his own voice from heaven, as both an apostle and a preacher to the Gentiles and a fulfiller of the apostolic teaching; who finds the holy Luke, being one of the seventy-two who had been scattered, whom having converted and made his follower he showed to be both a fellow-worker of the gospel and an apostle. And thus was the whole evangelical treatise completed up to this time. 1.233 My account will extend thus far concerning the twenty heresies and the sequence, according to my ability, of the evangelical enlightenment briefly described by me, which came into the world through Christ and his disciples, concerning which it is possible to collect and adduce similar oracles and prophecies from the law and psalms and the others, their sequences and developments, and to see and comprehend their accuracy, that the incarnate coming of Christ and the evangelical teaching are not spurious but true and foretold from the old testament and indubitable. But so that I do not extend the treatise of this composition to great length, I will be content with these things. Proceeding in order I will similarly describe the opinions that afterwards grew up in life on an evil pretext, having already moderately enumerated the eleven from the Jews and Samaritans and the nine before them from the Greeks and barbarians and the others that arose before the coming of the Lord and up to his time.
