being raised up, which will never happen, not even so do they have any defense for the things now being done by them. For even the three youths, and Daniel, and all the others, who were living in the captivity, expected to receive back their own city, and after seventy years to see the soil of their fatherland, and to live under their former laws; but yet, though they had a clear and acknowledged promise, not even so did they dare, before the promise and the return, to do any of the legal rites which these men do now; thus you too will be able to silence the Jew. For ask him, for what reason do you fast, when you do not have the city? And if he should say, Because I expect to receive the city back, say to him: Then be quiet until you receive it back. For those holy men, until they returned to their own fatherland, dared to do none of the things that you do now. From which it is clear that you are transgressing the law now, even if you are going to receive the city back, as you say, and you are violating the covenants with God, and you are insulting the polity itself. Now, to silence the shamelessness of the Jews, and to show that they are transgressing the law, what was said in the previous discourse to your charity is sufficient. But since we have been eager not only for this, to sew up their mouths, but also to teach the Church 48.884 its own doctrines more fully, come, let us prove this again abundantly, that the temple will not be raised up hereafter, nor will they return to their former polity. For in this way you will know the apostolic doctrines more accurately, and they will be caught acting more impiously. And we will provide as a witness of these things not an angel, not an archangel, but the very Master of the whole world, our Lord Jesus Christ. For entering into Jerusalem, and seeing the temple, he said, Jerusalem will be trodden down by many nations, until the times of many nations are fulfilled, speaking of the time until the end. And again concerning the temple he threatened these things, saying to the disciples, There shall not be left a stone upon a stone in this place, until it be thrown down, proclaiming beforehand the complete destruction and the desolation to the end. But the Jew objects to the testimony completely, and does not accept what has been said. For, he says, the one who says these things is my enemy; I crucified him, and how shall I accept his testimony? For this is the wondrous thing, O Jew, that the one whom you crucified, after being crucified then destroyed your city, then scattered your people, then dispersed the nation everywhere; teaching that he rose and lives, and is now in the heavens. For since through his good deeds you were not willing to know his power, through punishments and chastisements he taught you his invincible and unconquerable strength. But not even so do you believe, nor do you consider him to be God, and Master of the whole world, but one man among many. Come then, let us make the examination as if concerning a man. And how do we make the examination concerning men? When we see some men being truthful in all things, and nowhere lying, even if they happen to be enemies, and we have sense, we accept the things said by them; just as, therefore, when we see men lying, even if they are truthful in some things, we do not readily accept even those. 2. Come then, let us see what sort of character Christ had, and what was his way. For he not only foretold and proclaimed this, but he also announced then many other things that were to come to pass after a long time. Let us bring then those prophecies into the midst, and if you see him lying in those, do not accept this one either, nor consider it to be trustworthy; but if you see him being truthful in all things, and this prophecy having reached its fulfillment, and the ineffable time testifying to the truth of what was foretold, do not be shameless any longer, nor contend with matters clearer than the sun. What else then did he foretell, let us see. A woman came to him, having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and she poured out the oil. They rebuked
