for the sake of chastening your brother, do not hesitate; this is a martyrdom for you; since John too was a martyr; and yet he was not commanded to sacrifice, nor to worship an idol, but for the sake of the sacred laws which were being outraged, he laid down his head. You, therefore, strive even to death for the sake of the truth, and the Lord will fight for you. One person, fired with zeal, is sufficient to correct a whole people. And let no one say to me, 'I have nothing in common with my brother.' With the devil alone we have nothing in common, but with human beings we have much in common; they share the same nature with us, they inhabit the same earth, and are nourished by the same food, they have the same Master, they have received the same laws. Let us not, therefore, say these things, but let us show the care that is fitting for brothers. For how is it not absurd, if we see a fight in the marketplace, to approach and reconcile those who are fighting; and why do I say a fight? if we see a donkey that has fallen, we all extend a hand and hasten to raise it up; but to neglect brothers who are perishing, how is that not dreadful? Therefore, do not cease exhorting your brother when you see him perishing, even if he reviles you, even if he insults you, even if he threatens to become your enemy, even if he brandishes anything else against you, bear all things nobly, so that you may gain his salvation. If he becomes your enemy, God will be your friend, and will reward you with great good things on that day. For it is a great good to have mercy on the poor; but nothing is so great as delivering from error; for nothing is of equal value to the soul, not even the whole world. So that even if you give countless riches to the poor, you will not accomplish anything so great as one who converts a single soul. For he who does this becomes like Paul and Peter, not by running risks as they did, and enduring famines and plagues and the other evils; for the present time is one of peace; but by showing forth the things that come from zeal. And why do I say Peter and Paul? He will be the mouth of Christ; For he who brings forth the precious from the worthless, he says, shall be as my mouth. It is possible, therefore, even for those sitting at home, to engage in this fishing; if anyone has a friend and a relative and a household member, let him do these things, and he will be like Peter and Paul. And if you do not persuade him today, you will persuade him tomorrow; and if you never persuade him, you will have your reward in full; and if you do not persuade all, you will be able to persuade a few out of the many. For the apostles too, even if they did not persuade all, since they spoke to all, they reaped the reward for all. Therefore, since you cannot teach many, do not despise the few, nor by the desire for great things, draw yourself away from small ones. And if you cannot manage a hundred, take care of 63.610 ten; and if you cannot manage ten, do not despise five; and if you cannot manage five, do not overlook the one. For God is accustomed to award the crowns not according to the result of the achievements, but according to the intention of those who achieve them. For we who teach are not responsible for not persuading our hearers, but only for not counseling them; for to exhort is ours alone, but to be persuaded is theirs. And just as, if we have not exhorted, even if they achieve countless good things, the entire reward will belong to them alone, and there will be no gain for us; so if, when we have exhorted, they do not pay attention, all the punishment will overtake them, but for us there will be no blame, but a great reward will also come from God; for we have fulfilled all our part. For he who speaks to those who pay attention has the consolation for his speaking in the persuasion of his hearers; but he who speaks continually, and is not heard, and then does not cease speaking, would be worthy of greater honor, because, for the sake of what pleases God and with no one paying attention, he fulfills his entire part. But even if our reward is greater from your disobedience, nevertheless we desire that it should rather be diminished, and your salvation increased, considering your good repute to be a great reward. If, therefore, you see someone in need of spiritual or bodily healing, do not say to yourself, 'For what reason did so-and-so and so-and-so not heal him?' or, 'That I

ὑπὲρ τοῦ σωφρονίσαι τὸν ἀδελφὸν, μὴ ἀποκνήσῃς· μαρτύριόν σοι τοῦτό ἐστιν· ἐπεὶ καὶ Ἰωάννης μάρτυς ἦν· καίτοι γε οὐχὶ θῦσαι ἐκελεύσθη, οὐδὲ εἴδωλον προσκυνῆσαι, ἀλλ' ὑπὲρ τῶν ἱερῶν νόμων ὑβριζομένων τὴν κεφαλὴν ἀπέθετο. Καὶ σὺ τοίνυν ἀγώνισαι μέχρι θανάτου ὑπὲρ τῆς ἀληθείας, καὶ Κύριος πολεμήσει ὑπὲρ σοῦ. Ἀρκεῖ εἷς ἄνθρωπος ζήλῳ πεπυρωμένος ὁλόκληρον διορθώσασθαι δῆμον. Καὶ μή μοι τις λεγέτω, Οὐδὲν ἔχω κοινὸν πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφόν. Πρὸς τὸν διάβολον οὐδὲν ἔχομεν κοινὸν μόνον, πρὸς δὲ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους πολλὰ ἔχομεν κοινά· τῆς φύσεως ἡμῖν τῆς αὐτῆς μετέχουσι, τὴν αὐτὴν γῆν οἰκοῦσι, καὶ ταῖς αὐταῖς τρέφονται τροφαῖς, τὸν αὐτὸν ἔχουσι ∆εσπότην, τοὺς αὐτοὺς ἐδέξαντο νόμους. Μὴ τοίνυν ταῦτα λέγωμεν, ἀλλὰ τὴν πρέπουσαν ἀδελφοῖς κηδεμονίαν ἐπιδειξώμεθα. Πῶς γὰρ οὐκ ἄτοπον, εἰ μὲν μάχην ἴδοιμεν ἐπὶ τῆς ἀγορᾶς, προσιέναι καὶ καταλλάττειν τοὺς μαχομένους· καὶ τί λέγω μάχην; εἰ καταπεσόντα ἴδοιμεν ὄνον, πάντες χεῖρα ὀρέγομεν καὶ ἀναστῆσαι σπεύδομεν· τῶν δὲ ἀδελφῶν ἀπολλυμένων ἀμελεῖν καὶ πῶς οὐ δεινόν; Μὴ τοίνυν παύσῃ παραινῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὁρῶν ἀπολλύμενον, κἂν λοιδορῇ, κἂν ὑβρίζῃ, κἂν ἀπειλῇ ἐχθρὸς γενέσθαι, κἂν ὁτιοῦν ἕτερον ἐπανατείνηται, πάντα φέρε γενναίως, ὅπως αὐτοῦ κερδάνῃς τὴν σωτηρίαν. Ἐὰν οὗτος ἐχθρός σου γένηται, ὁ Θεὸς ἔσται σοι φίλος, καὶ μεγάλοις σε κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ἀμείψεται τοῖς ἀγαθοῖς. Μέγα μὲν γὰρ ἀγαθὸν καὶ τὸ ἐλεεῖν τοὺς πενομένους· ἀλλ' οὐδὲν τοιοῦτον οἷον τὸ πλάνης ἀπαλλάττειν· οὐδὲν γὰρ ψυχῆς ἀντάξιον, οὐδὲ ὁ κόσμος ἅπας. Ὥστε κἂν μυρία δῷς χρήματα πένησιν, οὐδὲν τοσοῦτον ἐργάσῃ οἷον ὁ μίαν ἐπιστρέφων ψυχήν. Ὁ γὰρ τοῦτο ποιῶν, κατὰ Παῦλον γίνεται καὶ Πέτρον, οὐχὶ κινδυνεύων καθάπερ ἐκεῖνοι, καὶ λιμοὺς καὶ λοιμοὺς καὶ τὰ ἄλλα ὑποφέρων κακά· εἰρήνης γὰρ ὁ παρὼν καιρός· ἀλλὰ τὰ ἀπὸ τῆς προθυμίας ἐπιδεικνύμενος. Καὶ τί λέγω Πέτρον καὶ Παῦλον; στόμα ἔσται τοῦ Χριστοῦ· Ὁ γὰρ ἐξάγων τίμιον ἐξ ἀναξίου, ὡς στόμα μου ἔσται, φησίν. Ἔξεστι τοίνυν καὶ οἴκοι καθημένοις, ταύτην τὴν ἁλείαν ἐργάζεσθαι· εἴ τις ἔχει φίλον καὶ συγγενῆ καὶ οἰκεῖον, ταῦτα ποιείτω, καὶ ἔσται κατὰ Πέτρον καὶ Παῦλον. Κἂν μὴ σήμερον πείσῃς, αὔριον πείσεις· κἂν μηδέποτε πείσῃς, σὺ τὸν μισθὸν ἕξεις ἀπηρτισμένον· κἂν μὴ πάντας πείσῃς, ὀλίγους ἀπὸ τῶν πολλῶν δυνήσῃ. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ οἱ ἀπόστολοι, εἰ καὶ μὴ πάντας ἔπεισαν, ἐπεὶ πᾶσι διελέχθησαν, τὸν ἐπὶ πᾶσι μισθὸν ἐκαρπώσαντο. Μὴ τοίνυν, ἐπειδὴ πολλοὺς οὐ δύνασαι διδάξαι, καὶ τῶν ὀλίγων καταφρόνει, μηδὲ τῇ τῶν μεγάλων ἐπιθυμίᾳ, καὶ τῶν μικρῶν σεαυτὸν ἀφελκύσῃς. Κἂν ἑκατὸν μὴ δυνηθῇς, τῶν 63.610 δέκα ἐπιμελήθητι· κἂν δέκα μὴ δυνηθῇς, μηδὲ τῶν πέντε καταφρονήσῃς· κἂν πέντε μὴ δυνηθῇς, τοῦ ἑνὸς μὴ ὑπερίδῃς. Καὶ γὰρ τοῦ μὴ πεῖσαι τοὺς ἀκούοντας οὐκ ἐσμὲν ὑπεύθυνοι οἱ διδάσκοντες, ἀλλὰ τοῦ μὴ συμβουλεῦσαι μόνον· τὸ μὲν γὰρ παραινέσαι μόνον ἡμέτερον, τὸ δὲ πεισθῆναι ἐκείνων. Καὶ καθάπερ ἡμῶν μὴ παραινεσάντων, κἂν μυρία κατορθώσωσιν ἐκεῖνοι, μόνοις αὐτοῖς ἅπας ὁ μισθὸς κείσεται, ἡμῖν δὲ οὐδὲν ἔσται κέρδος· οὕτως ἐὰν, ἡμῶν παραινεσάντων, ἐκεῖνοι μὴ προσέχωσιν, ἅπασα αὐτοὺς ἡ τιμωρία καταλήψεται, ἡμῖν δὲ οὐδὲν ἔσται ἔγκλημα, ἀλλὰ καὶ πολὺς ὁ μισθὸς ἀπαντήσεται παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ· τὸ γὰρ ἡμῶν ἅπαν ἐπληρώσαμεν. Ὁ μὲν γὰρ τοῖς προσέχουσι λέγων, ἔχει παραμυθίαν τοῦ λέγειν τὴν πειθὼ τῶν ἀκροωμένων· ὁ δὲ συνεχῶς λέγων, καὶ μὴ ἀκουόμενος, εἶτα οὐ παυόμενος τοῦ λέγειν, πλείονος ἂν εἴη τιμῆς ἄξιος, διὰ τὸ τῷ Θεῷ δοκοῦν καὶ μηδενὸς προσέχοντος, τὸ αὐτοῦ πληρῶν πᾶν. Ἀλλ' εἰ καὶ ἡμῖν ὁ μισθὸς μείζων ἐκ τῆς ὑμετέρας παρακοῆς, ὅμως ἐπιθυμοῦμεν τοῦτον ἐλαττωθῆναι μᾶλλον, καὶ τὴν ὑμετέραν αὐξηθῆναι σωτηρίαν, μισθὸν μέγαν τὴν ὑμετέραν εὐδοκίμησιν εἶναι νομίζοντες. Ἂν τοίνυν ἴδῃς τινὰ δεόμενον ψυχικῆς ἢ σωματικῆς θεραπείας, μὴ λέγε πρὸς ἑαυτὸν, Τίνος ἕνεκεν ὁ δεῖνα καὶ ὁ δεῖνα αὐτὸν οὐκ ἐθεράπευσεν; ἢ, ὅτι Ἐγὼ
