philanthropically to the people of the Jews. And now they are in compassion, serving the Romans, through divine compassions, not through their own worth. Repentance is not a passion of God, but a cessation of discipline. Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, to confess your great and holy name, to glory in your praise. And these things show, as the prophetic word teaches them, how one must propitiate God, and obtain care from him. And the divine apostle also foretold the future salvation for the Jews through Elijah the Tishbite; For, he says, the deliverer will come, and he will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; and this will be my covenant with them, when I take away their sins. But one must not expect the rebuilding of Jerusalem according to the myths of the foolish, nor the worship according to the law, nor the irrational sacrifices, nor circumcision, nor the sabbath, nor shadowy sprinklings after the all-holy baptism; for these are the delirious ravings of drunken old women; but a calling and knowledge of truth and faith in the Lord Christ, and the way of life of the New Covenant. And they are taught how they must pray, which the Jews expect, but we say was fulfilled through the coming of the Savior, with all people from all places approaching the saving proclamation, and expecting a better assembly into the kingdom of heaven, which being a true land has been promised in place of the present one, according to, Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth, where 55.666 the gathered will give thanks for what they were deemed worthy of, boasting in the praise of the one who saved them. Blessed is the Lord God of Israel from eternity and to eternity; and all the people will say, So be it, so be it. For the Lord of all is to be praised above all, who was called the God of Israel, who accomplished so much for the sake of the salvation of men. And it is fitting for all the people to add Amen to the voice of those who sing hymns. For the Hebrew calls 'So be it' 'Amen and amen'; whence also the custom has remained in the churches, for the people to assent to the doxology of the priest with 'Amen', and thereby offer fellowship, and receive the blessing, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
PSALM 106. Hallelujah.
1. We have often demonstrated that the Old Covenant is a shadow of the New; but no less
it is easy to learn this also from this psalm. For it both ordains the freedom of the Jews, and foretells the salvation of all men; and it has much consistency with those that precede it. For the one hundred and fourth had a narration of the promises made by God to the patriarchs, and of the gifts provided to their descendants; and the one after that taught, in addition to the benefactions, also the ingratitude of the Jews, and the punishments brought upon them because of it. But this one foretells the deliverance from captivity which came about through the ineffable philanthropy of God. And since our affairs are also foreshadowed in those, we see also in this psalm the ordinances of our salvation; for the greater part of the prophecy is more fitting for us than for them. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. Again the prophetic word exhorts to praise God the benefactor; and it says the cause of the hymnody is his philanthropy. And those who have escaped difficult circumstances would be able to say these things, by the mercy of God alone without

καὶ ἐκ τοῦδε τοῦ ψαλμοῦ ῥᾴ διον τοῦτο καταμαθεῖν. Τήν τε γὰρ Ἰουδαίων ἐλευθερίαν θεσπίζει, καὶ τὴν πάντων ἀνθρώπων σωτηρίαν προαγο ρεύει· ἔχει δὲ πολλὴν πρὸς τοὺς προτεταγμένους ἀκο λουθίαν. Ἐπειδὴ δὲ καὶ ἐν ἐκείνοις ἐσκιαγράφηται τὰ ἡμέτερα, ὁρῶμεν καὶ τῆς ἡμετέρας σωτηρίας καὶ ἐν τῷδε τῷ ψαλμῷ τὰ θεσπίσματα· μᾶλλον γὰρ ἡμῖν ἢ ἐκείνοις ἁρμόττει τῆς προφητείας τὸ πλεῖστον. Ἐξομολογεῖσθε τῷ Κυρίῳ, ὅτι χρηστὸς, ὅτι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ. Πάλιν ὑμνεῖν ὁ προφητικὸς παρακελεύεται λόγος τὸν εὐεργέτην Θεόν· αἰτίαν δὲ τῆς ὑμνῳδίας τὴν φιλανθρωπίαν εἶναί φησι.
