36, led by Eleusius. But the 150 holy fathers were led by Timothy of Alexandria, Meletius, the most holy of Antioch, Cyril, the most holy of Jerusalem, and the divine Gregory of Constantinople. But the 36 bishops who held the views of Macedonius, when urged by the fathers to accept the dogmas of Nicaea, just as the party of 69 Silvanus, sent to Rome, had submitted libelli and agreed with Liberius in the time of Valens, refused to agree with the truth and departed, becoming a laughing-stock to all, for thinking one thing but agreeing to another, deceitfully adducing the letters of Liberius as testifying to their orthodoxy. The holy synod confirmed the episcopacy of Constantinople for Gregory the Theologian, and they installed him on the throne against his will, as one who had toiled much and freed the city from the scourge of the heresies. But when he, the all-wise and most blessed one, learned that some of those from Egypt were jealous of the matter, he delivered his farewell speech and voluntarily withdrew from the throne of the queen of cities. After he had resigned, the emperor and the synod appointed Nectarius, a Tarsian by birth, who was then administering the office of praetor, who happened to be unbaptized until then, but was venerable and devout in his life. The holy and ecumenical synod confirmed the *homoousion*, and added to the creed the theology of the Spirit. It also set forth canons, in which it assigned to the throne of Constantinople the prerogatives of New Rome. At that time Gregory of Nyssa and Pelagius of Laodicea, and Eulogius of Edessa and Amphilochius of Iconium shone forth in this synod, along with the great Gregory and those aforementioned. The holy synod anathematized Arius and Eusebius of Nicomedia, Euzoius and Acacius, Theognis and Euphronius and the rest; in addition to these, it also condemned Macedonius the Pneumatomachian, and Eudoxius and Aetius and Eunomius. Meletius the Great, after the synod in Constantinople was completed, fell asleep in peace. His sacred body was transported to Antioch and was placed near the tomb of the holy martyr Babylas. Flavian was ordained bishop of Antioch, while Paulinus was still alive, even though oaths had been given that Flavian would not accept ordination as bishop. Therefore, turmoil again held the church of Antioch, with some submitting to Paulinus, and others to Flavian. At that time also the emperor brought the body of Paul the confessor to Constantinople and deposited it in the church which Macedonius had built while plotting against Paul. Nectarius, bishop of Constantinople, 16 years. 7. 3. 5. 1. 19. 6. 13. In this year Theodosius Augustus proclaimed Honorius, his son, born of the most pious Placilla, nobilissimus and consul. And he prepared to make war against the tyrant Maximus. And while he was waging war against him in the western parts, when a false rumor went out that Maximus had been victorious, the Arians rallied and set fire to the house of Nectarius, the bishop of Constantinople. 8. 4. 6. 2. 20. 7. 14. In this year in Antioch an addition was built onto the gate called the Taurian gate to widen the bridge, and it was roofed; and a small basilica was also built in the Old City near the great one. And in Palestine, in the village of Emmaus, a child was born, perfect from the navel, and divided above, so that it had two chests, two heads, and each possessed its senses. The one ate and drank, and the other did not eat; the one slept, and the other was awake; and there were times when they even played with one another, and both would cry, and both would cry, and they would strike one another. And they lived for a short while, for about two years. And the one died, and the other lived for four days, and it also died. In the same year the emperor Theodosius erected the column of Taurus. 9. 5. 7. 3. 21. 8.
