Let the earth bring forth. This small command was at once a great nature and an artistic word, executing the myriad properties of the things that grow faster than our thought. That command, still existing in the earth even now, urges it in each period of the year to bring forth its power, as much as it has for the generation of herbs, and seeds, and trees. For just as spinning tops, from the first blow given to them, make their subsequent rotations when, having fixed their center, they spin around themselves; so also the sequence of nature, having received its beginning from the first command, proceeds through all subsequent time, until it arrives at the common consummation of the universe. To which let us all also hasten, fruitful and full of good works, so that, planted in the house of the Lord, we may flourish in the courts of our God, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

HOMILY VI

On the generation of the luminaries.

6.1 It is fitting for the spectator of athletes to partake himself also of some vigor. And one might perceive this from the festival rules, which prescribe that those who sit together in the stadium should sit with bare head; in my opinion, so that each one may not be only a spectator of the contestants, but also a contestant himself in his turn. So, therefore, it is fitting for the examiner of great and marvelous spectacles, and the hearer of truly supreme and ineffable wisdom, to come having some starting points from home for the contemplation of the things set before us, and to share in my struggle to the best of his ability, standing by not so much as a judge but as a fellow contestant; lest perhaps the discovery of the truth escape us, and my error become a common loss for the hearers. Why then do I say these things? Because, since the examination of the constitution of the world and the contemplation of the universe lies before us, not having its principles from the wisdom of the world, but from what God taught his servant, speaking to him in a vision and not through riddles, it is surely altogether necessary that those fond of viewing great things not have an untrained mind for the comprehension of the things set before us. If ever, then, on a clear night you have gazed at the ineffable beauties of the stars, and conceived a thought of the artisan of the universe, who it is that has adorned the heaven with these flowers, and how what is necessary in the things seen is more than what is pleasing; again, if in the daytime with a sober mind you have considered the wonders of the day, and through the things seen you have reasoned to the one who is not seen, you come as a prepared hearer and one fitting for the full complement of this august and blessed theater. Come, then, just as guides take by the hand those unacquainted with cities and lead them around, so also will I myself guide you to the hidden wonders of this great city. In this city, in which is our ancient homeland, from which the man-slaying demon removed us, having enslaved man by his own lures; here you will see the first generation of man, and the death that immediately overtook us; which sin begot, the first-born offspring of the arch-evil demon. And you will know yourself, earthly indeed in nature, but the work of divine hands; in strength, indeed, falling far short of the irrational animals, but an appointed ruler of the irrational and the inanimate. Inferior in the preparations from nature, but through the abundance of reason able to be raised up to heaven itself. If we learn these things, we shall know ourselves, we shall know God, we shall worship the Creator, we shall serve the Master, we shall glorify the Father, we shall love our nourisher, the

Περὶ γενέσεως φωστήρων.

6.1 Τὸν ἀθλητῶν θεατὴν μετέχειν τινὸς προσῆκε καὶ αὐτὸν εὐτονίας. Καὶ τοῦτο ἐκ τῶν πανηγυρικῶν θεσμῶν ἄν τις κατίδοι, οἳ τοὺς συγκαθεζομένους εἰς τὸ στάδιον γυμνῇ καθῆσθαι τῇ κεφαλῇ διαγορεύουσιν· ἐμοὶ δοκεῖν, ἵνα μὴ θεατὴς μόνον ἀγωνιστῶν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀγωνιστὴς ἕκαστος αὐτὸς ἐν τῷ μέρει τυγχάνῃ. Οὕτω τοίνυν καὶ τὸν τῶν μεγάλων καὶ ὑπερφυῶν θεαμάτων ἐξεταστὴν, καὶ τὸν τῆς ἄκρας ὄντως καὶ ἀπορρήτου σοφίας ἀκροατὴν προσῆκεν οἴκοθεν ἔχειν ἥκοντά τινας ἀφορμὰς πρὸς τὴν θεωρίαν τῶν προκειμένων, καὶ κοινωνεῖν ἐμοὶ τῆς ἀγωνίας εἰς δύναμιν, οὐχὶ κριτὴν μᾶλλον ἢ συναγωνιστὴν παρεστῶτα· μήποτε ἄρα διαλάθῃ ἡμᾶς τῆς ἀληθείας ἡ εὕρεσις, καὶ τὸ ἐμὸν σφάλμα κοινὴ ζημία τῶν ἀκουόντων γένηται. Πρὸς οὖν τί ταῦτα λέγω; Ὅτι ἐπειδὴ πρόκειται ἡμῖν εἰς τὴν τοῦ κόσμου σύστασιν ἐξέτασις καὶ θεωρία τοῦ παντὸς, οὐκ ἐκ τῆς τοῦ κόσμου σοφίας τὰς ἀρχὰς ἔχουσα, ἀλλ' ἐξ ὧν τὸν ἑαυτοῦ θεράποντα ὁ Θεὸς ἐξεπαίδευσεν, ἐν εἴδει λαλήσας πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ οὐ δι' αἰνιγμάτων, ἀνάγκη που πάντως, τοὺς τῶν μεγάλων φιλοθεάμονας μὴ ἀγύμναστον ἔχειν τὸν νοῦν πρὸς τὴν τῶν προκειμένων ἡμῖν κατανόησιν. Εἴ ποτε οὖν ἐν αἰθρίᾳ νυκτερινῇ πρὸς τὰ ἄρρητα κάλλη τῶν ἄστρων ἐνατενίσας, ἔννοιαν ἔλαβες τοῦ τεχνίτου τῶν ὅλων, τίς ὁ τοῖς ἄνθεσι τούτοις διαποικίλας τὸν οὐρανὸν, καὶ ὅπως ἐν τοῖς ὁρωμένοις πλέον τοῦ τερπνοῦ τὸ ἀναγκαῖόν ἐστι· πάλιν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ εἰ νήφοντι τῷ λογισμῷ κατέμαθες τὰ τῆς ἡμέρας θαύματα, καὶ διὰ τῶν ὁρωμένων ἀνελογίσω τὸν οὐχ ὁρώμενον, ἐμπαράσκευος ἥκεις ἀκροατὴς καὶ πρέπων τῷ πληρώματι τοῦ σεμνοῦ τούτου καὶ μακαρίου θεάτρου. ∆εῦρο δὴ οὖν, ὥσπερ οἱ τοὺς ἀήθεις τῶν πόλεων τῆς χειρὸς λαβόμενοι περιηγοῦνται, οὕτω δὴ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπὶ τὰ κεκρυμμένα θαύματα ὑμᾶς τῆς μεγάλης ταύτης πόλεως ξεναγήσω. Ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ, ἐν ᾗ ἡ ἀρχαία πατρὶς ἡμῶν, ἧς μεταν έστησεν ἡμᾶς ὁ ἀνθρωποκτόνος δαίμων, τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ δελεάσμασιν ἀνδραποδίσας τὸν ἄνθρωπον· ἐνταῦθα κατόψει τὴν πρώτην τοῦ ἀνθρώπου γένεσιν, καὶ τὸν εὐθὺς ἡμᾶς ἐπικαταλαβόντα θάνατον· ὃν ἐγέννησεν ἡ ἁμαρτία, τὸ πρωτότοκον ἔκγονον τοῦ ἀρχεκάκου δαίμονος. Καὶ γνωρίσεις σαυτὸν, γήϊνον μὲν τῇ φύσει, ἔργον δὲ θείων χειρῶν· δυνάμει μὲν καὶ παραπολὺ τῶν ἀλόγων λειπόμενον, ἄρχοντα δὲ χειροτονητὸν τῶν ἀλόγων καὶ τῶν ἀψύχων. Ταῖς μὲν ἐκ τῆς φύσεως παρασκευαῖς ἐλαττούμενον, τῇ δὲ τοῦ λόγου περιουσίᾳ πρὸς οὐρανὸν αὐτὸν ὑπεραρθῆναι δυνάμενον. Ἐὰν ταῦτα μάθωμεν, ἑαυτοὺς ἐπιγνωσόμεθα, Θεὸν γνωρίσομεν, τὸν κτίσαντα προσκυνήσομεν, τῷ ∆εσπότῃ δουλεύσομεν, τὸν Πατέρα δοξάσομεν, τὸν τροφέα ἡμῶν ἀγαπήσομεν, τὸν
