No less also a churchman, Gaius by name, who lived at the time of Zephyrinus, bishop of the Romans; who indeed, in a written discussion with Proclus, the leader of the Phrygian opinion, says these very things about the places where the sacred tabernacles of the aforementioned apostles are laid: 2.25.7 "But I can show the trophies of the apostles. For if you will go to the Vatican or to the Ostian Way, you will find the trophies of those who founded this church." 2.25.8 And that they both suffered martyrdom at the same time, Dionysius, bishop of the Corinthians, speaking in writing to the Romans, establishes thus: "You also by this great admonition have bound together the planting of Peter and Paul which was made by the Romans and Corinthians. For both planted in our Corinth and likewise taught us, and likewise, having taught together in Italy, they suffered martyrdom at the same time." And these things, so that the matters of the history might be even more confirmed. 2.26.1 Again Josephus, having gone through the many calamities that befell the whole Jewish nation, states word for word among many other things that countless numbers of the Jews held in honor were tortured with scourges and crucified in Jerusalem itself by Florus; and that he was the procurator of Judea, when the war began to be stirred up, which happened in the twelfth year of the 2.26.2 reign of Nero. Then also throughout all Syria on account of the revolt of the Jews he says a terrible disturbance had taken place, those of the nation everywhere being mercilessly destroyed by the inhabitants of the cities as if they were enemies, so that one could see the cities full of unburied bodies and the corpses of old men thrown out together with infants and women not even having covering for their modesty, and the whole province was full of unspeakable calamities, but the tension over the threatened evils was greater than the atrocities committed at any one time. These are the words of Josephus. And such were the circumstances of the Jews. 3.pin.t Γ The 3rd book of the Ecclesiastical History also contains the following things 3.pin.1 Α In what parts of the earth the apostles preached Christ.
