rather than of the truth, when persecuted to withdraw, when stripped to be stripped of more besides, when cursed to pray for those who curse; in a word, to conquer audacity with kindness, and to make better those who do wrong, by what we patiently endure suffering? And yet, even if we were to grant that they punish vice with the exhortations of their fiction, where is there any reaching the measure of our virtue and training, for whom not to advance in the good, nor to be ever made new instead of old, but to remain in the same state is considered wickedness? The experience of spinning tops, running in circles, not advancing, and moving while stationary, so to speak, by the force of the whip. And we must have accomplished some good things, hold fast to others, and strive for others until the end and deification, for which we have been made and towards which we hasten, we whose thought is on passing through, and hoping for something worthy of the magnanimity of God.

μᾶλλον ἢ τῆς ἀληθείας, διωκομένους ὑποχωρεῖν, γυμνομένους προσαπεκδύεσθαι, καταρωμένους ὑπερεύχεσθαι τῶν ἀρωμένων· ἑνὶ λόγῳ, χρηστότητι νικᾷν θρασύτητα, καὶ βελτίους ποιεῖν τοὺς ἀδικοῦντας, οἷς καρτεροῦμεν πάσχοντες; Καίτοι κἂν εἰ κακίαν δοίημεν αὐτοὺς κολάζειν ταῖς τοῦ πλάσματος παραινέσεσι, ποῦ τὸ φθάσαι πρὸς τὰ μέτρα τῆς ἡμετέρας ἀρετῆς καὶ παιδεύσεως, οἷς καὶ τὸ μὴ προβαίνειν τῷ καλῷ, μηδὲ νέους ἀντὶ παλαιῶν ἀεὶ γίνεσθαι, ἀλλ' ἐν ταυτῷ μένειν κακία δοκεῖ; Στρόμβων τὸ πάθος περιτρεχόντων, οὐ προϊόντων, καὶ στάσιμον κινουμένων, ἵν' οὕτως εἴπω, τῇ βίᾳ τῆς μάστιγος. Καὶ δεῖ τὸ μὲν ἡμῖν ἐξηνύσθαι τῶν καλῶν, τοῦ δὲ ἔχεσθαι, τοῦ δὲ ἐφίεσθαι μέχρι τοῦ τέλους καὶ τῆς θεώσεως, ἐφ' ᾗ γεγόναμεν καὶ πρὸς ἣν ἐπειγόμεθα, οἵ γε διαβατικοὶ τὴν διάνοιαν, καί τι τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ μεγαλονοίας ἐλπίζοντες ἄξιον.
