15. In this year, Timotheus, the bishop of Alexandria, having died on the twenty-sixth of the month Epiphi, Theophilus was ordained in his place. Bishop of Alexandria, Theophilus, for 28 years. 10. 6. 8. 4. 22. 1. 16. In this year Theodosius, the pious emperor, having conquered Maximus the tyrant, killed him 12 days before the Kalends of August, and Andragathius, his general, as the murderer of Gratian. 11. 7. 9. 5. 23. 2. 17. In this year Theodosius came to Rome with Honorius, his son, and installed him as emperor there 5 days before the Ides of June, and went up to Constantinople. 71 12. 8. 10. 6. 24. 3. 18. In this year Eugenius usurped the throne, a former secretary from the grammarians who put on the imperial habit, with Arbogast from Lesser Galatia being with him. And hearing this, Valentinian the Younger, the son of Valentinian the Great and Justa, killed himself by hanging. But Theodosius, learning this, armed himself to go down for his vengeance. And Theophilus, the bishop of Alexandria, having petitioned Theodosius the emperor, cleansed the temple of the Hellenes in Alexandria and converted it into a church, and he publicly exposed the orgies of the Hellenes, both phalluses and anything more licentious and more profane than these. Wherefore the multitude of the Hellenes, being ashamed, committed many murders. And Theodosius, learning of the murders committed by them, blessed the slain Christians as martyrs; but he promised to forgive the Hellenes, if they would convert to Christianity; and he ordered that their temples be destroyed and the idols be melted down and given for the needs of the poor. And when the temple of Serapis in Alexandria was being dismantled, hieroglyphic characters were found having the form of a cross, which those of the Hellenes who had believed, seeing them, said signified the cross according to the meaning of the hieroglyphic letters, "life to come." Years of the world, 5883. Years of the divine incarnation, 383. Emperor of the Romans, Theodosius, 16 years. 13. Emperor of the Persians, Vararanes, 11 years. 9. Bishop of Rome, Siricius, 15 years. 11. Bishop of Constantinople, Nectarius, 16 years. 7. Bishop of Jerusalem, Cyril, 35 years. 25. Bishop of Alexandria, Theophilus, 28 years. 4. Bishop of Antioch, Meletius, 25 years. 19. In this year Marcellus, the bishop of Apamea in Syria, moved by divine zeal, destroyed the temples of the Hellenes in Apamea and for this reason was killed by the Hellenes. And Nectarius of Constantinople abolished the presbyter in charge of penance on account of the 72 sin that occurred in the church by a certain deacon against the woman who was engaged in penance. But in Rome and in all the West it is carefully preserved until now, and a place has been set apart for the penitents. Theodosius the emperor wrote a law that a woman should not advance to the diaconate, unless she has passed 60 years of age, according to the apostle. And he exiled Eunomius for holding separate assemblies and deceiving the people, and he died in exile. In the same year Plakilla, the wife of Theodosius, fell asleep, being pious and a lover of the poor, ministering with her own hands to the maimed and the sick. The Antiochenes broke this woman's statue and dragged it, being indignant on account of the public taxes imposed on them by the emperor. At which he, being exceedingly angry out of his love for the most pious Plakilla, was about to destroy them all, if Flavian, the bishop of Antioch, had not come and interceded on behalf of the Antiochenes; and John Chrysostom, being a presbyter of Antioch at that time and being present, delivered marvelous sermons for the admonishment of those who had dared to act against the imperial statues. 14. 10. 12. 8. 26. 5. 20. In this year, when Theodosius was campaigning against Eugenius the tyrant and had come down to Thessalonica with his army and entered the city, the city was thrown into confusion because of the quartering of the army and on the pretext of a charioteer and the son of the prefect;
