having gifted man with his image. And it is possible to understand from similar things; 57.3 for we see that the savior took into his hands, as it is in the gospel, when he reclined at supper and took these things and having given thanks said, "This is my these things," and gave to his disciples 57.4 and said, "This is my these things." And we see that it is not equal nor similar either to the incarnate image or to the invisible divinity or to the features of the limbs. For the one is roundish * and without 57.5 sensation. * but with respect to power and he willed by grace to say, "This is my these things," and no one disbelieves the word. For he who does not believe it to be true in what he said, falls from grace and from 57.6 salvation. But when we hear, we also believe; we believe that it is his *, but we know that our Lord is wholly sensation, wholly sentient, wholly God, wholly moving, wholly active, wholly light, wholly Word, incomprehensible, but has gifted this to us with grace. 58.1 This Adam, therefore, was placed in paradise and ate from the tree. But paradise, it says, "is in Eden toward the east"; "but a spring went up from Eden," and it did not say "came down," so that we might not think that Eden is in heaven. For if it were in heaven, it would have said that a spring "comes down" from above. But it also says "a river goes out from 58.2 Eden"; and it did not say comes down. This "is divided into four heads. The name of the one is Pishon," and we see the Pishon before our eyes. And Pishon is the one called Ganges by the Indians and Ethiopians, but the Greeks call this the Indus river. "For it flows around all of Havilah," both lesser and greater Ethiopia, the parts of the Havilahites, and it crosses greater Ethiopia and falls into the south and sets within Gades into the great Ocean. 58.3 The second river is "Gihon." And we see the river as sensible and not allegorized; for this is the one coming down through Ethiopia and crossing lesser Ethiopia, Anoubitis and Blemmyan and Axomitis and flooding the parts of the Thebaid and Egypt flows out into this sea. But if anyone disbelieves, let him hear Jeremiah saying, "What have you to do with the way of Egypt, to drink the troubled water of 58.4 Gihon"? "The third" it says "river is Tigris, which flows before the Assyrians"; for it cuts through the parts of the East and goes under the earth and rises up from Armenia in the middle of the Cardyaeans and Armenians and gushes forth again and is divided into the land of the 58.5 Assyrians. But also the fourth river, the Euphrates, likewise in the same way going under the earth comes up from 58.6 Armenia and thus floods Persia. If, therefore, there is no sensible paradise, there is no spring; if there is no spring, there is no river; if there is no river, there are no four heads; if there is no Pishon, there is no 58.7 Gihon, there is no Tigris; if there is no Tigris, there is no Euphrates; if there is no Euphrates, there is no fig tree, there are no leaves, there is no Adam, there is no eating, there is no Eve; if there is no Eve, he did not eat from the 58.8 tree; if he did not eat from the tree, there is no Adam; if there is no Adam, there are no men, but truth is henceforth a myth and all things are allegorized. There is, therefore, Adam; for we are from him, all being his offspring in succession, and we see him through the multitude in the succession. 59.1 For Adam begets Seth according to his own idea and according to his own image. For lest anyone should think the one formed is other than those begotten, for this reason the scripture says "according to his own idea and according to his own image."
