may come to pass. It would be necessary to add to these things the remaining point, that the good things set forth in the promises for those who have lived well are not of such a kind that they can be described in words. For how can one describe what eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has entered into the heart of man? Nor indeed is the painful life of those who have sinned comparable to anything here that distresses the senses. But even if one of the punishments there is called by names familiar here, the difference is great. For when you hear 'fire', you have been taught to understand something other than this fire, from the fact that something is added to that fire which is not in this one: for the one is not quenched, while for this one many means of extinguishing it have been discovered by experience; and great is the difference between that which is quenched and that which does not admit of being quenched. Therefore, it is something else, and not this. Again, when one hears 'worm', let him not be carried away in his thought by the sameness of name to this earthly creature; for the addition of its being 'un-ending' suggests that we should understand some other nature than the one we know. Since, therefore, these things are set before the hope of the life after this, arising in one's life suitably from each person’s choice according to the just judgment of God, it would be the part of the prudent not to look to the present but to what comes after this, and in this short and temporary life to lay the foundations for that ineffable blessedness and through good choice to be estranged from the experience of evils, both now in this life, and after this in the eternal recompense.
