If you hear 'souls' again, do not think they did not have bodies. For the whole man is called by one part. «Jacob went down,» for scripture says, «into Egypt with seventy-five souls,» not that the souls went without bodies, but with bodies; therefore it called the whole man 'souls.' And «we were in the ship about eighty souls,» says 59.3 Luke, who wrote the Acts of the Apostles. And custom is wont to call slaves 'bodies.' He is a master, it is said, of a hundred bodies; but they also have souls. But since the mastery of men holds sway over bodies but not souls, for this reason they reasonably called slaves 'bodies' with souls, in order to show the use 59.4 of the bodies.
