a poor man, and cities of men who are wronged shall bless you. For you became a helper to every humble city, and a shelter to those who despaired because of want. 2.3.18 and the Lord Sabaoth shall make for all the nations; on this mountain they shall drink gladness, they shall drink wine; they shall anoint themselves with myrrh on this mountain. Hand over all these things to the nations; for this counsel is for all the nations. Death, having prevailed, has swallowed them up, and again God has taken away every tear from every face; the reproach of the people God has taken away from all the earth, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.” 2.3.19 33. Of the same. “Do not remember the former things, and do not consider the ancient things; for behold, I am making new things which shall now spring up, and you shall know them, and I will make a road in the wilderness, and rivers in the waterless land; and the beasts of the field shall bless me, sirens and daughters of ostriches; for I have given water in the wilderness to give drink to my chosen race, my people whom I have acquired, that you may tell of my virtues. 2.3.20 I have not now called you, Jacob, nor have I made you to labor, Israel. You did not bring me the sheep of your whole burnt offering, nor did you glorify me in your sacrifices; you did not serve me with gifts, nor did I make you weary with frankincense, nor did you acquire for me incense for silver, nor did I desire the fat of your sacrifices, but in your sins and in your iniquities I stood before you.” 2.3.21 and in what follows he says: “Turn to me, and you shall be saved, you from the end of the earth. I am, and there is no other. I swear by myself, truly righteousness shall go forth from my mouth, my words shall not be turned back, that to me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear by the true God, saying, righteousness and glory shall come to him, and all who set themselves apart from the Lord shall be ashamed.” 2.3.22 34. Of the same. “Thus says the Lord, what is this bill of divorce of your mother, with which I sent her away? or to what creditor have I sold you? behold, for your sins you were sold, and for your iniquities I sent your mother away; because I came, and there was no man; I called, and there was none to obey,” and what follows. to which he adds: 2.3.23 “You who walk in darkness, and have no light, trust in the name of the Lord, and lean upon your God. Behold, all of you kindle a fire, you strengthen a flame. Walk by the light of your fire and by the flame which you have kindled. From me this has happened to you, in sorrow you shall lie down,” and what follows. to which he adds: 2.3.24 “Hear me, hear me, my people, and you kings, give ear to me, for a law shall go forth from me, and my judgment as a light for the nations. My righteousness draws near quickly, and my salvation shall go forth as a light, and in my arm the nations shall hope.” 2.3.25 35. From the same: “Is not my hand strong enough to save? or has his ear become heavy that it cannot hear? But your sins separate between you and God, and because of your sins he has turned his face away from you, that he might not have mercy; for your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with sins, 2.3.26 but your lips have spoken iniquity, and your tongue meditates injustice. No one speaks righteous things, nor is judgment true; they have trusted in vain things, and speak new things, for they conceive trouble and bring forth iniquity. 2.3.27 They have hatched the eggs of asps, and weave a spider’s 2.3.27 web, and he who wishes to eat of their eggs, having broken one, found a wind-egg, and in it a basilisk. Their web shall not be for a garment, nor shall they clothe themselves with their works; for their works are works of iniquity, and their feet run to evil, swift to shed blood, and their thoughts are thoughts of foolish men. Destruction and misery are in their ways, their paths are crooked, which they travel, and they do not know peace. 2.3.28 Therefore judgment has departed from them, and righteousness shall not overtake them. While they waited for light, darkness came upon them; waiting for brightness, they walked in gloom. They shall grope for the wall like blind men, and as
