And what is physically described in Plato's Timaeus concerning the son of God, when he says, "He placed him crosswise in the universe," he similarly said, having taken it from Moses. For in the writings of Moses it is recorded that at that time, when the Israelites went out from Egypt and were in the wilderness, they were met by venomous beasts, both vipers and asps and every kind of serpent, which was killing the people; and that Moses, by inspiration and power said to be from God, took brass and made the figure of a cross, and set this up upon the holy tabernacle and said to the people: If you look to this figure and believe, you will be saved in it. And when this was done, he recorded that the serpents died, and he related that the people thus escaped death. Which things Plato read, and not accurately understanding, nor perceiving it to be the figure of a cross, but thinking it a crosswise placement, said that the power next to the first God was placed crosswise in the universe. And as for his speaking of a third, it is because, as we have said before, he read that the Spirit of God was said by Moses to be borne upon the waters. For he gives the second place to the Word from God, whom he said was placed crosswise in the universe, and the third to the Spirit who was said to be borne upon the water, saying: And the third things concerning the third. And hear how the prophetic spirit signified through Moses that there would be a conflagration. He spoke thus: An ever-living fire will descend and consume down to the abyss below. Therefore we do not hold the same opinions as others, but all others speak by imitating ours. With us, therefore, it is possible to hear and learn these things from those who do not even know the letters of the alphabet, who are uneducated and barbarous in speech, but wise and faithful in mind, and some maimed and blind in their sight; so that one may understand that these things have not happened by human wisdom, but are spoken by the power of God. And in what manner we have dedicated ourselves to God, having been made new through Christ, we shall explain, lest by omitting this we should seem to act deceitfully in our explanation. As many as are persuaded and believe that these things taught and spoken by us are true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly, are taught to pray and, with fasting, to ask of God forgiveness for their former sins, while we pray and fast with them.
