of the prophet, and he passed away and died, being 155 years old. And his son Tobias, having gone into Media, and having buried his parents-in-law, and having heard about the destruction of Nineveh, he also died, being 107 years old. And with these things this book also has its end.
The Book of Judith. The book is called Judith, because when the sons of Israel were being warred against and besieged by Holofernes, God through Judith saved the people, and struck down Holofernes. And this is the story: Nebuchadnezzar the king of the Assyrians, having a war against Arphaxad king of the Medes, asked for an alliance from all the nations as far as Egypt. But when they had not given it, but all had spoken against it, after he conquered and overcame Arphaxad, he set war against those who had not given it. And he sent Holofernes with a great force against them. Therefore, he took all the other nations, and smashed their idols. But the sons of Israel secured themselves, and did not obey Holofernes, nor did they fear his threat. Therefore the priest Joakim wrote to those in Bethulia to block the way of Holofernes, since his way was from there, and they blocked it. And Holofernes drew up his forces for war. But Achior the leader of the sons of Ammon advised Holofernes not to fight the nation of the Hebrews on account of their God defending them. And Holofernes, having become angry, sent him back to Bethulia, threatening to destroy him if he should overcome the Hebrews. Achior, therefore, was in Bethulia resting. But Holofernes besieged the city, having first seized the waters. And when the people were already faint on account of thirst, and the rulers were about to hand over the city, Judith, casting off the garments of her widowhood (for she was mourning her husband, and was fasting continually), adorned herself as a bride, and having urged them much, so that they would not hand over the city for 5 days, she herself went out to Holofernes, and having deceived him with her wisdom, on the third day she beheaded him [on the third day], with his soldiers unaware, and so then the citizens, having hung the head of Holofernes from the wall, showed it to his generals. Then the 56.362 Assyrians fled, and the sons of Israel, running together from all sides, cut down the Assyrians. And having been saved and having plundered the enemies, they have given to Judith all the things of Holofernes. But Judith herself, having gone to Jerusalem, dedicated everything to the Lord, and having returned to her house, she kept the same discipline, and remained a widow until death, with no one being able to persuade her to enter into marriage. She died, having lived well in her widowhood, at 105 years of age. And with these things the book has its end. The Book of Job. The book is called Job, because it contains the story concerning him, how he suffered when tempted by the devil, and conquered him by piously enduring the plagues brought upon him; and he received all things double, and became more glorious than he had been. And he suffered being 70 years old, and he lived after the plagues 170 years, so that the total years of his life were 240. And Job lived before Moses; for he was the fifth from Abraham, a descendant of Esau. And because of the plague that came upon him, friends came to him to comfort him, and they were disposed so contentiously and mercilessly toward him in their words, that the matter was even reckoned to them as a sin. But Job prayed to God for them, and they were forgiven. Therefore, there are 8 dialogues of Job with his friends: of Eliphaz to him, three; of Zophar to him, two; and of Bildad, three. And also of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite. And finally the Lord speaks to Job through a whirlwind and a cloud. And Job also answers the Lord in two speeches. And this is the end of the book. And its entire purpose is to call to endurance those who fall into temptations, even if they have been well attested for piety, and not to be scandalized, but to exclaim: The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; as to the Lord

Βιβλίον Ἰουδίθ. Ἰουδὶθ καλεῖται τὸ βιβλίον, ἐπειδὴ πολεμουμένους καὶ πολιορκουμένους ὑπὸ τοῦ Ὀλοφέρνου τοῦς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ ὁ Θεὸς διὰ τῆς Ἰουδὶθ τοὺς μὲν λαοὺς ἔσωσε, τὸν δὲ Ὀλοφέρνην ἐπάταξεν. Ἡ δὲ ἱστορία αὕτη· Ναβουχοδονόσορ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἀσσυρίων, πόλεμον ἔχων πρὸς Ἀρφάξαδ βασιλέα Μήδων, ᾔτησε συμμαχίαν παρὰ τῶν ἐθνῶν πάντων ἕως Αἰγύπτου. Μὴ δεδωκότων δὲ αὐτῶν, ἀλλ' ἀντειρηκότων πάντων, μετὰ τὸ νικῆσαι καὶ περιγενέσθαι τοῦ Ἀρφάξαδ, ἔθετο κατὰ τῶν μὴ δεδωκότων πόλεμον. Καὶ ἀπέστειλε τὸν Ὀλοφέρνην μετὰ δυνάμεως πολλῆς κατ' αὐτῶν. Ὁ τοίνυν ἱερεὺς Ἰωακεὶμ ἔγραψε τοῖς ἐν Βετυλούᾳ φράξαι τὴν ὁδὸν Ὀλοφέρνου, ἐπειδὴ ἐκεῖθεν ἦν αὐτοῦ ἡ ὁδὸς, καὶ ἔφραξαν. Καὶ ὁ μὲν Ὀλοφέρνης παρετάσσετο εἰς πόλεμον. Ἀχιὼρ δὲ ὁ ἡγούμενος τῶν υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν συνεβούλευσε τῷ Ὀλοφέρνῃ μὴ πολεμεῖν τὸ ἔθνος τῶν Ἑβραίων διὰ τὸ ὑπερασπίζειν αὐτῶν τὸν Θεόν. Καὶ ὀργισθεὶς Ὀλοφέρνης ἀπέστρεψεν αὐτὸν εἰς Βετουλᾶ, ἀπειλήσας ἀναιρεῖν αὐτὸν εἰ περιγένοιτο τῶν Ἑβραίων. Ὁ μὲν οὖν Ἀχιὼρ ἦν Βετουλᾶ ἀναπαυόμενος. Ὁ δὲ Ὀλοφέρνης ἐπολιόρκει τὴν πόλιν, προκαταλαβὼν τὰ ὕδατα. Ἤδη δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ ἐκλυθέντος διὰ τὸ δίψος, καὶ μελλόντων ἐκδοῦναι τὴν πόλιν τῶν ἀρχόντων, Ἰουδὶθ ἀποβαλοῦσα τὰ τῆς χηρείας ἱμάτια (ἐπένθει γὰρ τὸν ἄνδρα, καὶ δι' ὅλου νηστεύουσα ἦν), ἐκόσμησεν ἑαυτὴν ὡς νύμφην, καὶ πολλὰ παρακαλέσασα, ὥστε μὴ ἐκδοῦναι τὴν πόλιν ἄχρις ἡμερῶν εʹ, ἐξῆλθεν αὐτὴ πρὸς τὸν Ὀλοφέρνην, καὶ τῇ σοφίᾳ αὐτῆς ἀπατήσασα αὐτὸν, τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀπεκεφάλισεν αὐτὸν [τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ], ἀγνοούντων στρατιωτῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὕτω λοιπὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους οἱ πολῖται ἀφάψαντες τὴν κεφαλὴν Ὀλοφέρνου, τοῖς αὐτοῦ στρατηγοῖς ὑπέδειξαν. Ἐντεῦθεν οἱ γὰρ 56.362 Ἀσσύριοι ἔφυγον, οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ πανταχόθεν συνδραμόντες κατέκοψαν τοὺς Ἀσσυρίους. Σωθέντες δὲ καὶ σκυλεύσαντες τοὺς πολεμίους, δεδώκασι τῇ Ἰουδὶθ πάντα τὰ τοῦ Ὀλοφέρνου. Αὐτὴ δὲ Ἰουδὶθἀπελθοῦσα εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἀνέθηκε πάντα τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ ἐπιστρέψασα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς, τὴν αὐτὴν εἶχε ἄσκησιν, καὶ διέμεινεν ἕως θανάτου χήρα, μηδενὸς αὐτὴν ἰσχύοντος πεῖσαι πρὸς γάμον ἐλθεῖν. Ἀπέθανε δὲ ζήσασα καλῶς ἐν τῇ χηρείᾳ αὐτῆς ἐτῶν ρεʹ. Καὶ ἐν τούτοις τέλος ἔχει τὸ βιβλίον. Ἰὼβ βιβλίον. Ἰὼβ καλεῖται τὸ βιβλίον, ἐπειδὴ τὴν κατ' αὐτὸν ἱστορίαν περιέχει, πῶς τε πέπονθε πειρασθεὶς ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου, καὶ νικήσας αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ὑπομεῖναι εὐσεβῶς τὰς ἐπενεχθείσας αὐτῷ πληγάς· καὶ διπλᾶ πάντα ἀπέλαβε, καὶ γέγονεν ἐνδοξότερος ὑπὲρ ὃ ἦν. Πέπονθε δὲ ἐτῶν ὢν οʹ, ἐπέζησε δὲ μετὰ τὰς πληγὰς ἔτη ροʹ, ὡς εἶναι τὰ πάντα τῆς ζωῆς αὐτοῦ ἔτη σμʹ. Γέγονε δὲ Ἰὼβ πρὸ Μωϋσέως· ἀπὸ γὰρ Ἀβραὰμπέμπτος ἦν, ἔγγονος Ἡσαῦ. ∆ιὰ δὲ τὴν γενομένην κατ' αὐτοῦ πληγὴν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν φίλοι παρακαλεῖν αὐτὸν, καὶ τοσοῦτον φιλονείκως καὶ ἀνηλεῶς πρὸς αὐτὸν διετέθησαν τοῖς λόγοις, ὥστε καὶ ἁμαρτίαν αὐτοῖς τὸ πρᾶγμα λογισθῆναι. Ὁ δὲ Ἰὼβ παρεκάλεσε τὸν Θεὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν, καὶ συνεχωρήθη αὐτοῖς. Εἰσὶν οὖν τῷ Ἰὼβ διάλογοι πρὸς τοὺς φίλους ηʹ· τοῦ Ἐλιφὰζ πρὸς αὐτὸν τρεῖς· τοῦ Σωφὰρ πρὸς αὐτὸν δύο· καὶ τοῦ Βαλδὰδ τρεῖς. Ἔτι δὲ καὶ τοῦ Ἐλιοὺζ τοῦ Βαραχιὴλ τοῦ Βουζίτου. Καὶ λοιπὸν ὁ Κύριος χρηματίζει τῷ Ἰὼβ διὰ λαίλαπος καὶ νεφέλης. Ἀποκρίνεται δὲ καὶ Ἰὼβ τῷ Κυρίῳ διὰ λόγων δύο. Καὶ τοῦτο τέλος ἔχει τὸ βιβλίον. Ἔστι δὲ ὁ σκοπὸς αὐτοῦ ἅπας πρὸς ὑπομονὴν ἐκκαλούμενος τοὺς ἐν πειρασμοῖς περιπίπτοντας, κἂν πάνυ ἐπ' εὐσεβείᾳ μεμαρτύρηνται, καὶ μὴ σκανδαλίζεσθαι, ἀλλ' ἐπιφωνεῖν· Ὁ Κύριος ἔδωκε, ὁ Κύριος ἀφείλετο· ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ
