made useless from the rods, and you will know all those who have not kept the law, and you will see the dwelling place of each one. I say to him, “Lord, why did he send some away to the tower, but leave others to you?” “All who,” he says, “transgressed the law which they received from him, he left them to my authority for repentance; but all who have already been well-pleased with the law and have kept it, he has them under his own authority.” “Who then, sir,” I say, “are the ones who are crowned and go into the tower?” Answering, he says to me, “These crowned ones are they who have wrestled with the devil and have conquered him; these are they who have suffered for the law; but the others, who also gave up their rods green and having shoots, but not having fruit, were afflicted for the law, but did not suffer nor deny their law. And those who gave them up green, just as they received them, are venerable and righteous and have walked exceedingly in a pure heart and have kept the commandments of the Lord. But the rest you will know, when I have examined these rods which have been planted and watered.” After a few days we came to the place, and the shepherd sat down in the place of the great angel, and I stood beside him. He says to me, “Gird yourself with a linen cloth and serve me.” I girded myself with a clean linen cloth made of sackcloth. Seeing me girded and ready to serve him, he says, “Call the men whose rods are planted, according to the ranks, as each one gave up his rod.” I went away into the plain and called them all; and they all stood rank by rank. And he says to them, “Let each one pull up his own rod and bring it to me.” First they gave them up who had them dry and cut short; likewise they were found dry and cut short; he commanded them to stand apart. Then those who had the rods dry and not cut short gave them up; some of them gave up their rods green, but some dry and cut short as if by a moth. He commanded those who had given them up green to stand apart, and those who had them dry and cut short he commanded to stand with the first. Then they gave them up who had them half-dry and with cracks; many of them gave them up green and without cracks; and some green and having shoots, and on the shoots fruits, like those which they had who went into the tower crowned; some gave them up dry and eaten, and some dry and not eaten, and some as they were, half-dry and with cracks. He commanded them each to stand apart, some with their own ranks, and others apart. Then they gave up their rods who had them green, but with cracks; all these gave them up green and stood in their own rank. The shepherd rejoiced over these, because they all were changed and had put off their cracks. And they also gave them up who had half green, and half dry; the rods of some were found completely green, of some half-dry, of some dry and eaten, and of some green and having shoots. All these were sent away each to his own rank. Then they gave them up who had two parts green, but the third dry; many of them gave them up green, many half-dry, and others dry and eaten; all these were sent away each to his own rank. And others gave up their rods, two parts dry, but the third green; many of them gave them up half-dry, some dry and eaten, and some half-dry and
