to all others. May God repay you the reward both in the present life and in the age to come for this magnanimity, for this liberality, for this eagerness, for this zeal, for this love of the poor, for this genuine love; for indeed in all these things you abound and luxuriate, laying up for yourself the greatest prizes in the age to come. We too, learning these things while sitting in such a wilderness, and surrounded by many difficulties; for both the siege of Isaurian fear, and the desolation of the place, and the severity of winter afflict us; but nevertheless, hearing these things about your honor, we do not even perceive these sorrows, but we also reap much consolation, leaping, rejoicing, being glad for such great achievements, for the unspeakable wealth which you are gathering for yourself in the heavens. Therefore, so that we may rejoice in another matter as well, do not hesitate to write to us continually, bringing the good news about your health. For we greatly desire to hear about your well-being. And you yourself know this, since you also know that, how we always hold fast to your love. 123. To the presbyters and monks in Phoenicia, who are instructing the Greeks. When pilots see the sea raging, and rising up, and a great storm, and a squall, not only do they not abandon the ship, but then they even use greater diligence, and greater eagerness, both being sober themselves, and rousing the others. And again doctors, when they see the fever has arisen and become severe, not only do they not abandon the one who is sick, but then they too do everything, both by themselves and through others, using greater diligence and eagerness, 52.677 so as to resolve the evil. For what reason do I say these things? So that no one may deceive you into abandoning Phoenicia on account of the disturbance that has occurred, and departing from there; but the more the difficulties, and the more severe the waves, and the greater the disturbance, by so much the more do you remain, being diligent, being sober, being watchful, showing forth more eagerness, so that your most beautiful building may not be destroyed, nor so much labor become useless, nor your husbandry be wiped out. For God is able to both resolve the disturbance and to give you the reward for your endurance. For your reward is not so great when matters were accomplished with ease, as it is for you now, when there is much difficulty, much disturbance, many who cause scandal. Therefore, considering both the toil that you toiled, and the labor that you endured, and the achievements that you achieved, and that by the grace of God you have destroyed so great a part of impiety, and the affairs of Phoenicia came to a state of progress, and that your reward is greater now and the recompense is larger, and that God will quickly also destroy the hindrances, and will give you many returns for your endurance, remain, stand firm. For nothing shall be lacking to you even now, but I have commanded you to enjoy the same abundance and liberality, whether in clothing, or in footwear, or in provisions for the brethren. But if we, being in such great affliction, and difficulty, and inhabiting the wilderness of Cucusus, take such great care of your achievements, how much more must you also, enjoying much abundance, I mean according to the need of necessities, contribute what is from yourselves. I beseech you, therefore, let no one frighten you. For indeed the affairs have also taken on better hopes; and you will be able to learn this from the copies sent from my lord, the most devout presbyter Constantius. And if you remain, even if the hindrances be ten thousand, you will overcome them all. For nothing is equal to endurance and perseverance; for it is like a rock; but these disturbances and plots, which are made against the Church, are like waves dashing against the rock, and being dissolved into their own foam. Consider how many things the blessed apostles suffered both from their own people, and from strangers, and that all the time of their preaching was through temptations, through dangers,

ἄλλοις ἅπασιν. Ὁ Θεός σοι τὸν μισθὸν ἀποδῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ παρόντι βίῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι αἰῶνι τῆς μεγαλοψυχίας ταύτης, τῆς δαψιλείας, τῆς προθυμίας, τοῦ ζήλου, τῆς φιλοπτωχείας, τῆς γνησίας ἀγάπης· καὶ γὰρ ἐν ἅπασι τούτοις βρύεις καὶ κομᾷς, μέγιστα σεαυτῷ ἀποτιθέμενος βραβεῖα ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι αἰῶνι. Ταῦτα καὶ ἡμεῖς μανθάνοντες ἐν ἐρημίᾳ τοσαύτῃ καθήμενοι, καὶ πολλαῖς κυκλούμενοι περιστάσεσι· καὶ γὰρ Ἰσαυρικοῦ φόβου πολιορκία, καὶ χωρίου ἐρημία, καὶ χειμῶνος σφοδρότης ἡμᾶς θλίβει· ἀλλ' ὅμως ταῦτα ἀκούοντες περὶ τῆς σῆς τιμιότητος, οὐδὲ αἴσθησιν τούτων λαμβάνομεν τῶν λυπηρῶν, ἀλλὰ καὶ πολλὴν καρπούμεθα τὴν παράκλησιν, σκιρτῶντες, εὐφραινόμενοι, χαίροντες ἐπὶ τοῖς τοσούτοις κατορθώμασιν, ἐπὶ τῷ πλούτῳ τῷ ἀφάτῳ, ὃν ἐν οὐρανοῖς συνάγεις σεαυτῷ. Ἵν' οὖν καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ εὐφραινώμεθα, γράφειν ἡμῖν συνεχῶς μὴ κατόκνει, τὰ περὶ τῆς ὑγείας τῆς σῆς εὐαγγελιζόμενος. Σφόδρα γὰρ ἐπιθυμοῦμεν ἀκούειν τὰ περὶ τῆς ῥώσεως τῆς σῆς. Καὶ τοῦτο οἶσθα καὶ αὐτὸς, ἐπειδήπερ κἀκεῖνο οἶσθα, ὅπως ἀεὶ τῆς ἀγάπης τῆς σῆς ἀντεχόμεθα. ΡΚΓʹ. Πρὸς τοὺς ἐν Φοινίκῃ πρεσβυτέρους καὶ μονάζοντας, τοὺς κατηχοῦντας τοὺς Ἕλληνας. Οἱ κυβερνῆται ἐπειδὰν ἴδωσι τὴν θάλασσαν μαινομένην, καὶ ἐγειρομένην, καὶ πολὺν τὸν χειμῶνα, καὶ τὴν ζάλην, οὐ μόνον οὐκ ἀφιᾶσι τὸ πλοῖον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τότε πλείονι κέχρηνται τῇ σπουδῇ, καὶ μείζονι τῇ προθυμίᾳ, καὶ αὐτοὶ νήφοντες, καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους διεγείροντες. Καὶ ἰατροὶ πάλιν ὅταν ἴδωσι τὸν πυρετὸν ἐγερθέντα, καὶ σφοδρὸν γενόμενον, οὐ μόνον οὐ καταλιμπάνουσι τὸν νοσοῦντα, ἀλλὰ καὶ τότε καὶ αὐτοὶ πάντα ποιοῦσι, καὶ δι' ἑαυτῶν, καὶ δι' ἑτέρων μείζονι κεχρημένοι τῇ σπουδῇ καὶ τῇ προθυμίᾳ, 52.677 ὥστε λῦσαι τὸ κακόν. Τίνος ἕνεκεν ταῦτα λέγω; Ἵνα μή τις ὑμᾶς ἀπατήσῃ διὰ τὴν ταραχὴν τὴν γεγενημένην καταλιπεῖν τὴν Φοινίκην, καὶ ἀναχωρῆσαι ἐκεῖθεν· ἀλλὰ ὅσῳ πλείους αἱ δυσκολίαι, καὶ χαλεπώτερα τὰ κύματα, καὶ μείζων ἡ ταραχὴ, τοσούτῳ μᾶλλον ἐμμένετε σπουδάζοντες, νήφοντες, ἀγρυπνοῦντες, πλείονα προθυμίαν ἐπιδεικνύμενοι, ὥστε μὴ τὴν οἰκοδομὴν ὑμῶν τὴν καλλίστην καταλυθῆναι, μηδὲ τὸν τοσοῦτον πόνον ἀνωφελῆ γενέσθαι, μηδὲ τὴν γεωργίαν ὑμῶν ἀφανισθῆναι. Ἱκανὸς γὰρ ὁ Θεὸς καὶ τὴν ταραχὴν λῦσαι καὶ τῆς ὑπομονῆς ὑμῖν δοῦναι τὸν μισθόν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ τοσοῦτος ὑμῖν ὁ μισθὸς, ὅτε μετ' εὐκολίας τὰ πράγματα ἠνύετο, ὅσος ἐστὶν ὑμῖν νῦν, ὅτε πολλὴ ἡ δυσκολία, πολλὴ ἡ ταραχὴ, πολλοὶ οἱ σκανδαλίζοντες. Ἐννοοῦντες τοίνυν καὶ τὸν κάματον ὃν ἐκάμετε, καὶ τὸν πόνον ὃν ὑπεμείνατε, καὶ τὰ κατορθώματα ἃ κατωρθώσατε, καὶ ὅτι χάριτι Θεοῦ τοσοῦτον κατελύσατε τῆς ἀσεβείας τὸ μέρος, καὶ εἰς προκοπὴν τὰ πράγματα τῆς Φοινίκης ἦλθε, καὶ ὅτι πλείων ὁ μισθὸς νῦν ὑμῖν καὶ μείζων ἡ ἀμοιβὴ, καὶ ὅτι ταχέως ὁ Θεὸς καὶ τὰ κωλύματα καταλύσει, καὶ πολλὰς ὑμῖν τῆς ὑπομονῆς δώσει τὰς ἀντιδόσεις, παραμένετε, ἐνίστασθε. Οὐδὲν γὰρ ὑμῖν ἔχει λεῖψαι οὐδὲ νῦν, ἀλλὰ τῆς αὐτῆς ἀφθονίας καὶ δαψιλέας ἀπολαύειν ὑμᾶς ἐκέλευσα, εἴτε ἐν ἐνδύμασιν, εἴτε ἐν ὑποδήμασιν, εἴτε ἐν διατροφαῖς τῶν ἀδελφῶν. Εἰ δὲ ἡμεῖς ἐν τοσαύτῃ θλίψει ὄντες, καὶ περιστάσει, καὶ ἐρημίαν οἰκοῦντες τὴν Κουκουσὸν, τοσαύτην ποιούμεθα φροντίδα τῶν κατορθωμάτων τῶν ὑμετέρων, πολλῷ μᾶλλον καὶ ὑμᾶς δεῖ πολλῆς εὐπορίας ἀπολαύοντας, κατὰ τὴν χρείαν λέγω τῶν ἀναγκαίων, τὰ παρ' ἑαυτῶν συνεισφέρειν. Παρακαλῶ τοίνυν, μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς φοβήσῃ. Καὶ γὰρ καὶ τὰ πράγματα χρηστοτέρας ἔσχεν ἐλπίδας· καὶ δυνήσεσθε τοῦτο μαθεῖν ἀπὸ τῶν ἀντιγράφων τῶν ἀποσταλέντων παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου μου τοῦ εὐλαβεστάτου πρεσβυτέρου Κωνσταντίου. Καὶ ἐὰν παραμείνητε, κἂν μυρία ᾖ τὰ κωλύματα, πάντων περιέσεσθε. Οὐδὲν γὰρ ὑπομονῆς ἴσον καὶ καρτερίας· πέτρᾳ γὰρ ἔοικεν· αἱ δὲ ταραχαὶ αὗται καὶ αἱ ἐπιβουλαὶ, αἱ κατὰ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας γινόμεναι, κύμασιν ἐοίκασι προσρηγνυμένοις τῇ πέτρᾳ, καὶ διαλυομένοις εἰς οἰκεῖον ἀφρόν. Ἐννοήσατε ὅσα μακάριοι ἀπόστολοι ἔπασχον καὶ παρὰ οἰκείων, καὶ παρὰ ἀλλοτρίων, καὶ ὅτι πάντα τὸν χρόνον τοῦ κηρύγματος διὰ πειρασμῶν, διὰ κινδύνων,
