And when the battle took place and many had fallen, my brother Ajax, having commanded the kings of the Hellenes to defend against the other Indians and Trojans, rushes against Memnon, king of the Indians, with the hero Achilles, your father, reinforcing Ajax from behind, hiding himself. But Memnon, paying attention to Ajax who rushed 129 against him, getting down from his chariot, immediately came near; and they test each other with their spears. But Ajax first, twisting his spear, turns over his shield, falling heavily upon him. And when those near Memnon came against Ajax while he had Memnon, your father Achilles, seeing this, casting his spear into the neck of the same Memnon, as the tendon was bared, kills him unexpectedly. And when he fell suddenly, there arose a clamor and a flight of the barbarians; and we, the Hellenes, perceiving this and filled with courage, kill all the Ethiopians. And when Polydamas came upon Ajax, Telamonian Ajax, rushing against him, striking his groin with a spear, kills him. And when he and many others had died, the fleeing Ethiopians were slain, with the horsemen trampling them down. And the ground was filled with corpses, and evening came; so the Trojans asked for a truce concerning the dead. And when we Hellenes agreed, both sides made pyres and cremated the dead. And the Trojans, having secured the gates, remained mourning for their champions and for Memnon. And after a few days had passed, as your father Achilles, along with us Achaeans, was challenging the Trojans, there came out leading the barbarians the brothers Paris and Deiphobus; and with them, along with the multitude, were Lycaon and Troilus, also sons of Priam. And Achilles, your father, rushing out again, with all of us Hellenes, pursues the barbarians; and 130 many, fleeing, fell into the Scamander river and perished, and were openly taken alive. And Achilles kills the sons of Priam, Troilus and Lycaon, and we Achaeans the rest. And there was great grief in Ilium for Troilus; for he was still young and noble and beautiful. And after some days the festival of the offerings was at hand, and there was a truce in the war, as sacrifices were made, with the Danaans and the Trojans sacrificing to Thymbraean Apollo in the grove which was a short distance from the city. And when Polyxena went out with Hecuba to the temple, Achilles, having seen her, marveled at her. But Priam, having seen Achilles, sends a certain man named Idaeus to him, bearing words concerning Polyxena, while Achilles was walking alone in the grove of Apollo. And Achilles, having heard the word about her, was kindled with love; but we Hellenes, having seen Idaeus speaking privately with Achilles, became greatly agitated, as if your father Achilles were betraying us. And we sent a message to him through my brother Ajax and Diomedes and Odysseus, so that they might instruct him not to trust himself alone to the barbarians. And they, having gone, waited for him outside the grove, so that they might give him the message. But your father Achilles agrees with Idaeus to take Polyxena in marriage. And after a little while Paris comes 131 to Achilles secretly, and Deiphobus, his brother, entreating him concerning the marriage of Polyxena. And Achilles receives them privately, unknown to others, suspecting no evil, because they were in the grove of Apollo. And Paris, as if to confirm by oath the things spoken between him and Achilles, stands beside the altar. And with Deiphobus embracing Achilles, also Paris from his sides, his
