called Valentinian the Younger. And Constantius, having fought with Honorius, killed the tyrants in Rome; and they confiscated their houses and brought peace to the city. And John, the great teacher, enlightened not only the church of Constantinople, but also of Thrace and Asia and Pontus, so that even before the holy synod in Chalcedon, he of Constantinople ruled these churches. And a certain Macedonian, through the teaching of his father, came to the church; and having advised his own wife also to convert and take communion, he barely persuaded her. But she, having given a communion from the Macedonians to her own maidservant, ordered her to keep it with her. And indeed, approaching Chrysostom and receiving the communion from his holy hands, pretending to partake of it, she secretly gave it to the maidservant, and taking the one from the Macedonians, she brings it to her mouth and found it had become a stone; and shuddering, she came trembling to the feet of John, confessing her audacity and sincerely approaching the church; and the stone was deposited in the treasury to be kept. And the letter of Chrysostom to Theodore of Mopsuestia is not to the first, but to the one who became the last. Arsenius the Great, having been in the world and having disdained all things, pursued the divine philosophy in Egypt, shining in life and word and miracles in the monastic order. In the same year Arcadius erected the column of Xerolophos, and founded Arcadiopolis in Thrace. Years of the world 5896. Years of the divine incarnation 396. Roman emperor Arcadius, 14 years. 10th year. Persian king Isdigerdes, 21 years. 10th year. Bishop of Rome Innocent, 15 years. 7th year. Bishop of Constantinople John, 6 years. 4th year. Bishop of Jerusalem John, 16 years. 3rd year. Bishop of Alexandria Theophilus, 28 years. 17th year. Bishop of Antioch Flavian, 22 years. 7th year. In this year John Chrysostom was great in life and 78 word and shone with divine gifts and was exact in every virtue. All the people loved him, being greatly edified by his teachings, but those living dissolutely turned away from him; who also cooperated in the war against him. Among these things happened also the affair concerning Eutropius the eunuch, and also the contention of Severian of Gabala against Sarapion the archdeacon of John, and the matter of the "Tall Brothers," who had fled from Egypt on account of Theophilus, and the letters from Theophilus to Epiphanius; from all of which things the servant of God, John, was conspired against. And Epiphanius of Cyprus, having come to the Hebdomon, performed ordinations and assemblies against the will of John. But though John overlooked this for the sake of divine love and rather urged Epiphanius to stay with him in the episcopal palace, he did not choose to, having been preoccupied by the slanders of Theophilus against the blessed John. 11. 11. 8. 5. 4. 18. 8. In this year John Chrysostom made a sermon against wicked women, which his ill-wishers and enemies of the truth used to provoke Eudoxia, saying that the sermon had been spoken against her. And she, saying to Arcadius that she had suffered terribly at the hands of John, arranged for Theophilus to be summoned, who was a manifest enemy of John. who, having arrived at the Oak, which is now called Rufinianae, worked the plot against John; and they expelled him from the city. And the people, learning this, made a great tumult, not permitting John to be expelled. Amidst which, Eudoxia, too, moved by the lamentations of the people, besought Arcadius the emperor, and sending Brison the eunuch from Praenetus, he recalled John. But he did not consent to enter before the examination of a synod, but stayed in a suburb near the Anaplus. But the people, crying out against the emperors, forced them to bring John in and establish him on his throne; so that Theophilus and those with him, being afraid, fled from the city. then 60 bishops
