born in an instant, to be a tyrant of cities, and a ruler of peoples, exceedingly wealthy and powerful; but the one born in another turn of the moment, to be a certain beggar and vagabond, going from door to door for the sake of his daily food. For this reason, having divided the so-called zodiac circle into twelve parts, since the sun passes through a twelfth of the so-called sphere of the fixed stars in thirty days, they have divided each of the twelve parts into thirty degrees. Then, having divided each degree into sixty parts, they again cut each of the sixtieths sixty times. Let us then, setting down the nativities of those being born, see if they will be able to preserve this precision of the division of time. For at the same time the child was born, and the midwife examines whether the one born is male or female; then she waits for the cry, which is a sign of the life of the one born. How many sixtieths do you want to have run by in this time? She told the Chaldean of the birth. Through how many, do you wish, shall we say the midwife's voice has passed of the most minute parts of time; especially if the one who is recording the hour happens to be standing outside the women's quarters? For it is necessary for the one who is going to learn the horoscopes to record the hour with precision, whether these happen to be in the day or in the night. How many a swarm of sixtieths again runs by in this time? For it is necessary for the horoscoping star to be found not only in which twelfth-part it is, but also in what degree of the twelfth-part, and in what sixtieth, into which we said the degree is divided; or, so that the exact thing may be found, in what sixtieth of those subdivided from the first sixtieths. And they say that it is necessary to make this so subtle and incomprehensible finding of time for each of the planets, so that it might be found what sort of relation they had to the fixed stars, and what sort of aspect they had to one another at the then nativity of the one being born. So that if it is impossible to hit upon the hour precisely, and the variation of the briefest moment makes one miss the whole, then ridiculous are both those who have devoted themselves to this real art, and those who have gaped at them, as if they were able to know their own affairs. 6.6 And what about the predictions? So-and-so, he says, has curly hair, and is bright-eyed; for he has his hour in Aries; and somehow the animal is seen to be of such a kind. But also high-minded, since the ram is a leader; and generous, and again resourceful; since this animal both sheds its wool without grief, and again is easily clothed by nature. But also the Taurean is long-suffering, he says, and servile; since the bull is under the yoke. And the Scorpian is quarrelsome, because of the likeness to the beast. And the Librarian is just, because of the equality of the scales among us. What could be more ridiculous than these things? The ram, from which you take the birth of the man, is the twelfth part of the heaven, in which the sun, being there, touches upon the vernal signs. And the scales, and the bull likewise, each of these is a twelfth-part of the so-called zodiacal circle. How then, saying that the preeminent causes for the lives of men exist from there, do you characterize the morals of men who are born from the cattle among us? For the Arian is generous, not because that part of heaven is productive of such a character, but because the sheep is of such a nature. Why then do you put us to shame from the trustworthiness of the stars, but attempt to persuade us through the bleatings? For if heaven, having taken them from the animals, has such properties of character, it is also itself subject to other principles, having its causes dependent on cattle; but if it is ridiculous to say this, it is far more ridiculous to attempt to bring plausibilities into the argument from things that have nothing in common. But these wise things of theirs are like spider webs, in which when a gnat, or a fly, or something similarly weak to these is caught, being bound it is held fast; but whenever one of the stronger things

Τούτων τί ἂν γένοιτο καταγελαστότερον; Ὁ κριὸς, ἀφ' οὗ τὴν γένεσιν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου λαμβάνεις, οὐρανοῦ μέρος ἐστὶ τὸ δωδέκατον, ἐν ᾧ γενόμενος ὁ ἥλιος τῶν ἐαρινῶν σημείων ἅπτεται. Τί οὖν δυσωπεῖς μὲν ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τῆς ἀξιοπιστίας τῶν ἄστρων, πείθειν δὲ ἐπιχειρεῖς διὰ τῶν βληχημάτων; Εἰ μὲν γὰρ παρὰ τῶν ζῴων λαβὼν ὁ οὐρανὸς ἔχει τὰ τοιαῦ τα τῶν ἠθῶν ἰδιώματα, καὶ αὐτὸς ὑπόκειται ἀλλοτρίαις ἀρχαῖς, ἐκ τῶν βοσκημάτων ἔχων τὰς αἰτίας ἀπηρτημένας· εἰ δὲ καταγέλαστον τοῦτο εἰπεῖν, καταγελαστότερον πολλῷ ἐκ τῶν μηδὲν κοινωνούντων ἐπάγειν ἐπιχειρεῖν τῷ λόγῳ τὰς πιθανότητας.
