God has made, as the two sides bind the whole body; for He made her neither from his front, so that the woman might not be superior to the man, nor from his back, so that the man might not be superior to the woman, but from the side, as being equal by nature; even if the man has precedence as the cause in time, yet not in nature itself. Furthermore, because the hand always covers and guards its own side, thus having fashioned the female from the male and the male from the earth, He proclaimed them both to be one flesh, from the structure of the two sides and by the fruit that springs from their union. For this reason the fornicator sins, alienating his own flesh and sowing a disordered fruit, but the adulterer is ranked with the murderer, as dividing the one flesh and working a murder. 3.48 Further. Perhaps someone might again be perplexed, saying: Why, when all the irrational animals were made male and female at the same time by God, was man alone not made at the same time as the female, but most alone, and then the female came into being later? Such a one will hear that since all the animals made by God were irrational and unable to know anything, and since all the angels were made at once as rational beings and knew in the particular events, I mean in the six days, the maker of the universe, it was necessary for man also, having been created rational by God and being the bond of all creation, to be taught the creator of the universe. 3.49 But since he did not exist before, but was made after all things, he was not able to know God either from the things made before him, or from himself, God was pleased not to bring forth the female from him at the same time as him, but later, so that he might know through this that He who brought forth this similar being from him also brought him forth. Ἔτι τε καὶ διὰ τὸ σκέπειν διαπαντὸς τὴν χεῖρα καὶ φυλάττειν τὴν ἰδίαν πλευράν, οὕτω τὸ θῆλυ ἐκ τοῦ ἄρρενος ἐργασάμενος καὶ τὸ ἄρρεν ἐκ τῆς γῆς, μίαν εἶναι σάρκα ἀμφοτέρους προσηγόρευσεν, ἐκ τῆς κατασκευῆς τῶν δύο πλευρῶν καὶ τῷ ἐκ τῆς συναφείας βλαστάνοντι καρπῷ. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο ὁ πορνεύων ἁμαρτάνει ἀλλοτριῶν τὴν ἰδίαν σάρκα καὶ ἄτακτον καρπὸν σπείρων, ὁ δὲ μοιχεύων μετὰ τοῦ φονέως τέτακται, ὡς διαιρῶν τὴν μίαν σάρκα καὶ φόνον ἐργαζόμενος. 3.48 Ἔτι. Ἴσως ἀπορήσειέ τις πάλιν λέγων· ∆ιατί πάντων μὲν τῶν ἀλόγων ἄρρεν καὶ θῆλυ ἅμα γενομένων παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ, μόνος ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὐχ ἅμα τοῦ θήλεος γέγονεν, ἀλλὰ μονώτατος, εἶθ' οὕτω καὶ τὸ θῆλυ ὕστερον ἐγένετο; Ἀκούσεται ὁ τοιοῦτος ὅτι πάντων τῶν γενομένων ζῴων παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλόγων ὄντων καὶ μὴ δυναμένων γνῶναί τι, πάντων δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων ὑφ' ἓν γενομένων λογικῶν καὶ γινωσκόντων ἐν τοῖς κατὰ μέρος γεγονόσι, λέγω δὴ ἐν ταῖς ἓξ ἡμέραις, τὸν ποιητὴν τοῦ παντός, ἀνάγκη καὶ τὸν ἄνθρωπον λογικὸν δημιουργηθέντα παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ σύνδεσμον ὄντα πάσης τῆς κτίσεως διδαχθῆναι καὶ αὐτὸν τοῦ παντὸς τὸν δημιουργόν. 3.49 Ἐπειδὴ δὲ μὴ ὄντος αὐτοῦ τὸ πρότερον, ἀλλ' ὕστερον πάντων γενομένου, οὐκ ἠδύνατο οὔτε ἐκ τῶν πρὸ αὐτοῦ γενομένων, οὔτε ἐξ ἑαυτοῦ γνῶναι Θεόν, ηὐδόκησεν ὁ Θεὸς μὴ ἅμα αὐτῷ, ἀλλ' ὕστερον, τὸ θῆλυ ἐξ αὐτοῦ παραγαγεῖν, ἵνα γνῷ διὰ τούτου ὅτι ὁ τοῦτο τὸ ὅμοιον ἐξ αὐτοῦ παραγαγὼν καὶ αὐτὸν παρήγαγε. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ἔκστασιν αὐτῷ ἐπέβαλε καὶ ὕπνωσεν, ἵνα ἀφαιρουμένης τῆς πλευρᾶς αὐτοῦ ἀπόνως καὶ ἀλύπως ὡς ἐν ὕπνῳ διὰ τῆς χάριτος τοῦ Θεοῦ αἴσθησιν τοῦ γινομένου δέξηται καὶ τὸν πεποιηκότα ἀνυμνήσειεν ὁμολογῶν καὶ λέγων· "Τοῦτο νῦν ὀστοῦν ἐκ τῶν ὀστέων μου καὶ σὰρξ ἐκ τῆς σαρκός μου· αὕτη κληθήσεται γυνή, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς ἐλήφθη." Τῶν ἀγγέλων τοίνυν λογικῶν γεγονότων καὶ διὰ τῶν ἔργων τῶν ἐν ταῖς ἓξ ἡμέραις γενομένων παιδευθέντων τὸν αἴτιον, ἀναγκαίως καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος διὰ τοῦ θήλεος ἐπαιδεύθη καὶ ἔμαθεν ἑαυτοῦ τε καὶ τοῦ παντὸς εἶναι τὸν Θεὸν δημιουργόν, μάλιστα προακούσας τοῦ Θεοῦ λέγοντος· "Ποιήσωμεν αὐτῷ βοηθὸν κατ' αὐτόν." Τὸ κείμενον 3.50 Εἶτα πάλιν καὶ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ ἡμέρᾳ, μετὰ τὸ ἀποκαλύψαι τῷ Μωϋσῇ πᾶσαν τὴν κοσμοποιΐαν καὶ τοιούτων ὀπτασιῶν μυστικῶν ἀξιῶσαι, τότε ὡμίλει αὐτῷ, καὶ δοὺς αὐτῷ τὸν νόμον ἐν πλαξὶ λιθίναις γεγραμμένον δακτύλῳ Θεοῦ καὶ σοφίσας αὐτὸν τῶν γραμμάτων τὴν πεῖραν καὶ δοξάσας αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον ἀφίησι κατελθεῖν ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους. 3.51 Εἶτα μετὰ ταῦτα προστάττει αὐτῷ σκηνὴν ἐπιτελέσαι κατὰ τὸν τύπον, ὃν ἑωράκει ἐν τῷ ὄρει, ὡσανεὶ τύπον οὖσαν παντὸς τοῦ κόσμου. Ἐποίησεν οὖν τὴν σκηνὴν κατὰ τὸ δυνατὸν μιμήσασθαι θέλων τὸ σχῆμα τοῦ κόσμου οὕτως· τριάκοντα πηχέων τὸ μῆκος καὶ δέκα τὸ πλάτος, καὶ μεσολαβήσας καταπέτασμα μεσόθεν ποιεῖ αὐτὴν χώρους δύο, καὶ ἐλέγετο ἡ πρώτη Ἅγια, ἡ δευτέρα ἡ μετὰ τὸ καταπέτασμα Ἅγια ἁγίων. Τύπος δὲ ἦν ἡ ἐξωτέρα τούτου τοῦ κόσμου τοῦ ὁρωμένου, κατὰ τὸν θεῖον Ἀπόστολον, ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἕως τοῦ στερεώματος, ἐν ᾗ ὑπῆρχε τράπεζα κατὰ τὸ βόρειον μέρος καὶ ἐπάνω τῆς τραπέζης δώδεκα ἄρτοι, τύπον ἐπέχουσα τῆς γῆς, καρποὺς παντοδαποὺς ἔχουσα μηνιαῖον ἕνα, ὡσανεὶ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ δώδεκα. 3.52 Πέριξ δὲ τῆς τραπέζης κύκλῳ κυμάτιον στρεπτὸν σημαῖνον τὴν θάλασσαν, τὸν λεγόμενον Ὠκεανόν, εἶτα καὶ πέριξ τούτου πάλιν κύκλῳ στεφάνην παλαιστοῦ σημαίνουσαν τὴν πέραν γῆν, ἔνθα ἐστὶ καὶ ὁ παράδεισος κατὰ ἀνατολάς, ἔνθα καὶ τὰ ἄκρα τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τοῦ πρώτου τοῦ καμαροειδοῦς τοῖς ἄκροις τῆς γῆς πάντοθεν ἐπερείδεται. Εἶτα καὶ τὴν λυχνίαν εἰς τὸ νότιον μέρος τέθεικε φαίνουσαν εἰς βορρᾶν τῇ γῇ ἀπὸ τοῦ νότου· ἑπτὰ δὲ λύχνους
