the dead were raised, and remained with us for many years. And what more? It is not possible to tell the number of the gifts which the church, having received from God throughout the whole world, performs each day in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, for the benefit of the nations, neither deceiving anyone, nor making a profit. For as she has received freely from God, she also ministers freely. 2.54.1 But as each one of us ... receives his own body, so also he has his own soul. For God is not ... poor, nor needy, so as not to have bestowed on each single body its own soul, just as also its own form. And for this reason, when the number which He Himself has predestined in His own counsel is filled, all who have been enrolled for life will rise again, having their own bodies, and having their own souls, and their own spirits, in which they pleased God. But those worthy of punishment will go away into the same, they also having their own souls, and their own bodies, in which they departed from the grace of God. And both will cease from begetting any more, and being begotten, and marrying and being given in marriage; so that the commensurate class of mankind predestined by God, having been completed, may keep the harmony of the Father.

νεκροὶ ἠγέρθησαν, καὶ παρέμειναν σὺν ἡμῖν ἱκανοῖς ἔτεσι. Καὶ τί γάρ; οὐκ ἔστιν ἀριθμὸν εἰπεῖν τῶν χαρισμάτων, ὧν κατὰ παντὸς τοῦ κόσμου ἡ ἐκκλησία παρὰ Θεοῦ λαβοῦσα, ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, τοῦ σταυρωθέντος ἐπὶ Ποντίου Πιλάτου, ἑκάστης ἡμέρας ἐπ' εὐεργεσίᾳ τῇ τῶν ἐθνῶν ἐπιτελεῖ, μήτε ἐξαπατῶσα τινὰς, μήτε ἐξαργυριζομένη. Ὡς γὰρ δωρεὰν εἴληφε παρὰ Θεοῦ, δωρεὰν καὶ διακονεῖ. 2.54.1 Ἀλλ' ὡς εἷς ἕκαστος ἡμῶν ἴδιον σῶμα ... λαμβάνει, οὕτως καὶ ἰδίαν ἔχει ψυχήν. Οὐ γὰρ ... πτωχὸς, οὐδὲ ἄπορος ὁ Θεὸς, ὥστε μὴ ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ σώματι ἰδίαν κεχαρίσθαι ψυχὴν, καθάπερ καὶ ἴδιον χαρακτῆρα. Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πληρωθέντος τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ, οὗ αὐτὸς παρ' αὐτῷ προώρισε, πάντες οἱ ἐγγραφέντες εἰς ζωὴν ἀναστήσονται, ἴδια ἔχοντες σώματα, καὶ ἰδίας ἔχοντες ψυχὰς, καὶ ἴδια πνεύματα, ἐν οἷς εὐηρέστησαν τῷ Θεῷ. Οἱ δὲ τῆς κολάσεως ἄξιοι ἀπελεύσονται εἰς τὴν αὐτὴν, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἰδίας ἔχοντες ψυχὰς, καὶ ἴδια σώματα, ἐν οἷς ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ χάριτος. Καὶ παύσονται ἑκάτεροι τοῦ γεννᾶν ἔτι, καὶ γεννᾶσθαι, καὶ γαμεῖν καὶ γαμεῖσθαι· ἵνα τὸ σύμμετρον φῦλον τῆς προορίσεως ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἀνθρωπότητος ἀποτελεσθεὶς, τὴν ἁρμονίαν τηρήσῃ τοῦ Πατρός.
