into life" and that "The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force," did you recline on soft couches and in all things pursue comfort? When I said, "Whoever wishes to be first, let him be the last of all and the servant of all and the minister of all," did you prefer the first places at feasts and the first seats, offices and leadership and ministries and the greatness of honors, and were you unwilling to be subject or to serve in humility of soul one who is humble and poor and rejected? When I said, "Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them," did you fulfill only your own needs and wills and desires, being greedy, grasping, doing wrong, and serving only yourselves? When I said, "If anyone strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also," did some of you laugh, while others could not even bear to hear this, but convicted me of commanding this evilly and unjustly (106)? And when I said, "If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two," not only did none of you do this, but did not most of you even force your brothers? When I said, "Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account," did you not endure to hear a harsh word, not only from your peers, but not even from your superiors? When I said, "Rejoice and be glad in persecutions and afflictions," did you embrace praises rather, and honor and glory, but in such things did you renounce even your very life? When I called the poor blessed, did you not ever desire from your soul to become poor? When I said that the meek inherit the kingdom of heaven, were you disposed like wild beasts towards those who did not quickly do your will? When you saw them, in turn, transgressing my commandments, did you then become compassionate and moderate and say, "Forgive, the Lord said; do not be angry with anyone"? Did you not say, whenever I said, "Pray for those who abuse you, love your enemies and do good to those who hate you," "This is for the apostles, this is for the great saints! For who else can do this?" Wretched ones, and why did you not become saints? Did you not hear me say, "Be holy, for I am holy," but you remained in the impurity of your defilements and lawlessnesses."
(107) And to the women he will say: "Did you not hear in the churches those who read and say: 'The life of Saint Pelagia, who was once a prostitute,' 'The life of the venerable Mary of Egypt, who was once a prodigal,' 'of Theodora the adulteress and after this a wonderworker,' and again, 'of Euphrosyne the virgin who was renamed Smaragdus,' and 'of Xenia, the truly strange and wonderful?' Did you not hear how they left parents and wealth and even their betrothed and served me in humility and lowliness and became saints? Why then did you not imitate these and such women as these: the prostitutes the prostitutes, the prodigals the prodigals, the married women the married women who sinned, the virgins the virgins and those like you?
And to the men, both kings and rulers, he will likewise say: "Did you not hear how David, having sinned, and when Nathan the prophet came to him and convicted him concerning his sin, he did not talk back, was not angered, did not hide his sin, but rising up from his throne, he fell upon the ground before all the people and said, 'I have sinned against my Lord!' and did not cease day and night weeping and lamenting together? Did you not hear him saying: 'For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping, because of the voice of my groaning my bone has clung to my flesh, I have become like a pelican of the wilderness,' and again: 'I am weary with my groaning; every night I will wash my bed,'
