Coming together, they justly annulled all the things against 79 the divine John by Theophilus and those with him. ιβʹ. ιβʹ. θʹ. ϛʹ. εʹ. ιθʹ. θʹ. In this year the empress Eudoxia, having had a silver statue of herself made, set it up in a place called the Pittakia near Saint Irene. But the prefect of the city, being a Manichaean and a pagan sympathizer, by performing clapping and choirs and dances before the statue and making disturbances, annoyed John, not allowing him to perform the divine liturgies in peace; for he often confused the chanters. The holy John inveighed against this with a sermon. But he stirred up Eudoxia against John, as if John were displeased at the honor of her statue. And then again hatred against John, again anger. And he then delivered the sermon, whose beginning is: "Again Herodias rages." Then the complete enmity of the empress was stirred up against him, and again deposition and exile. And the people burned the church; and many were endangered on behalf of John. And John was driven out of the city and was exiled to Cucusus, and from there he was transferred to Pityus. And having arrived in Comana while passing through Armenia, he died in the Lord. And when he was exiled, Arsacius was ordained, the brother of Nectarius who was before Chrysostom. And Innocent of Rome and Flavian of Antioch did not approve of the expulsion of John, but through letters they comforted the clergy of the city and were displeased at the audacious acts. And Epiphanius sailed away to Cyprus, as God, it seems, had foretold his death. And they say that he also revealed to John his death in exile, and John to Epiphanius his on the ship. Epiphanius said to those sending him off: "I am in a hurry, and I leave to you the books, the city, and the hypocrisy." And in the same year Eudoxia also dies. Arsacius, bishop of Constantinople, for 2 years. ιγʹ. ιγʹ. ιʹ. αʹ. ϛʹ. κʹ. ιʹ. In this year the emperor Arcadius, being in Carya, in which they also say the holy martyr Acacius suffered, and having prayed 80 and come out of the temple, immediately the largest building in Carya collapsed. And the crowd, having been saved by the prayer of the emperor, attributed their salvation to it. ιδʹ. ιδʹ. ιαʹ. βʹ. ζʹ. καʹ. ιαʹ. In this year in Rome the earth rumbled for 7 days. And the most illustrious Stilicho was slaughtered in Ravenna, and other rulers also. And in the same year Arcadius died 11 days before the Kalends of September. And Arcadius the father, perceiving the young Theodosius to be very small and unprotected, and fearing that he might be plotted against by someone, proclaimed him emperor and in his will appointed as his guardian Yazdegerd, the king of the Persians. But Yazdegerd, the king of the Persians, having accepted the will of Arcadius, maintained abundant peace with the Romans and preserved the empire for Theodosius; and having sent a certain Antiochus, an admirable and most learned man, as regent and tutor, he writes the following to the Roman senate: Since Arcadius has fallen asleep and appointed me guardian of the child, I have sent one to fill my place. Therefore let no one attempt a plot against the child, lest I renew a war without treaty against the Romans. And Antiochus, having come, was with the emperor; and he was knowledgeably instructed in the matters of the Christians by his uncle Honorius and his sister Pulcheria. And there was peace between the Romans and Persians, especially since Antiochus wrote many things on behalf of the Christians; and thus Christianity was spread in Persia, with Maruthas, the bishop of Mesopotamia, mediating.
