the earth from its foundations, and the fire will be given up not little by little but all at once and will cover all the earth, and it all will become a river of fire".

What then will they do who say: "If only they had left me here, and I did not want the kingdom of heaven"? What will become of those who now laugh and say this: "Why then do you command us to weep every day?" And those who engage in contradictions or murmurings or even things worse than these, what defense will they make then? Will they say: "We did not hear"? or that: "No one admonished us"? or that: "We were ignorant of your name, O Master, your power, your strength, your might"? "For how many things, O wretched ones, as he might rightly say to us, did I foretell and command you through prophets, through apostles, through all My servants together and through Myself? Did you not hear My gospels saying: "Repent"? (105) Did you not hear them saying: "Blessed are those who weep now, for they shall laugh"? Did you not hear me crying out: "Blessed are those who mourn"? But you were laughing boisterously, conversing with one another and prolonging your idle talk, inviting one another to fine meals and indulging your bellies. When I said: "How narrow is the gate and afflicted the way that leads to life," and that "The kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent take it by force," were you not reclining on soft couches and in all things pursuing comfort? When I said: "Whoever wishes to be first, let him be the last of all and the servant of all and the minister of all," did you not prefer the first seats and places of honor, offices and leaderships and ministries and great dignities, and you were not willing to be subject to or serve in humility of soul one who is lowly and poor and cast out? When I said: "Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them," did you not fulfill only your own pleasures and wills and desires, taking advantage, seizing, doing injustice, and serving only yourselves? When I said: "If anyone strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also," did not some of you laugh, while others could not even bear to hear this, but convicted me of commanding this badly and unjustly (106)? And when I said: "If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two," not only did none of you do this, but most of you also forced your brothers? When I said: "Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake," you could not bear to hear even a harsh word, not only from your peers, but not even from your superiors? When I said: "Rejoice and be glad in persecutions and afflictions," did you not rather embrace praise and honor and glory, and for such things renounce even your own life? When I declared the poor blessed, did you not ever desire from your soul to become poor? When I said that the meek inherit the kingdom of heaven, were you not disposed like wild beasts toward those who did not quickly do your will? And seeing them in turn transgressing my commandments, did you then become sympathetic and moderate and say, "Let it go, the Lord said: Do not be angry with anyone"? Did you not say, whenever I said: "Pray for those who mistreat you, love your enemies and do good to those who hate you," "That is for the apostles, that is for the great saints! For who else is able to do this?" Wretched ones, and why did you not become saints? Did you not hear me saying: "Be holy, for I am holy," but you remained in the impurity of your defilements and lawlessness".

(107) And to the women he will say: "Did you not hear in the churches those who read and say: "The Life of Saint Pelagia, who was once a prostitute," "The Life
