it was taken away from them even to be called Christians; see how in the beginning through everything he reminds them of the name of Christ, saying: Paul, a called apostle of Jesus Christ, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus; to those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks for the grace given to you in Christ Jesus, as the testimony of Christ was revealed in you, awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ; who will also confirm you blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is God, through whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ, Now I beseech you through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. See the continuity of the name of Christ; from which it is clear that he did this not rashly and simply, but by the density of this good name, removing the summons, and the schism, and their being named after others. Called, not a self-appointed apostle, as you are appointed teachers; but through Jesus Christ. «For the grace given to you in Christ Jesus; that in everything you were enriched in him, in all speech and all knowledge.» Through whom was it given? Was it through me, or through another apostle? Not at all, he says, but through Jesus Christ. For this is the meaning of, in Christ Jesus. «As the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you.» If then you were confirmed and strengthened through signs and grace, for what reason are you shaken? «So that you are not lacking in any gift.» He shows how much they are about to deprive themselves of, by adhering to the false teachers. «Awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.» It is as if he were saying: Why are you disturbed? Why are you troubled that Christ is not present? He is indeed present, and the day is at the doors; and there is need of much virtue, and many labors, so as to be able to reach the end. And he says revelation, showing that, even if he is not seen, yet he is and is present, and will be revealed both now and then. «Faithful is God, through whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Now I beseech you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all say the same thing.» It is as if he were saying: You were called into the fellowship of the Only-begotten, and you attach yourselves to men, 95.573 what is worse than this misery? But how were they called? Through the Father. For since he continually says about the Son, 'Through him,' and, 'in him,' lest they should think that he thus mentions him as being lesser, he attributed these things to the Father. And the phrase, into the fellowship of His Son, is similar to what is said elsewhere, if we suffer with him, we will also reign with him. And he now pre-arranges these things in his discourse, so that the great vehemence of the accusations does not cause them to fall into despair. «And let there be no schisms among you.» The term 'schism' is itself a strong accusation. For when a whole is divided into many parts, not only does it not become many, but the one is also destroyed. «But be perfectly united in the same mind, and in the same judgment.» Since he had rebuked them very sharply with the term 'schism', he again softens his speech, saying: that you may be perfectly united; it is as if he were saying: Do not think that I advise concord only in words; for I seek that which comes from the mind. «For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brothers, by those of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says.» Again by the name of brotherhood he summons them to persuasion. «I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas.» Not that they called themselves of Paul or of Cephas, but he transfers their names to himself, as he himself also declares in the following. And by this he signifies that if they should not have been called by the names of Paul, and Peter, and Apollos, much more not of others. «And I of Christ.» He does not find fault with this, that some even called themselves of Christ, but that not all did, but that Christ was given as if in some portion.
