14. And when so many things had been said in the secretum, none of the patriarchs
uttered. And when the subject of the synod of Rome was raised, Demosthenes cries out: The synod has not been ratified, since the one who convened it was deposed. And the servant of God says: He was not deposed, but was driven out. What synodical and canonical action regarding what was done securely establishes his deposition? Yet even if he was canonically deposed, this does not create a prejudice against those things that were orthodoxly ratified according to the divine canons; with which also the writings of the holy Pope Theodore agree. And upon hearing these things, Troilus the patrician says: You do not know what you are saying, Abba; what has been done, has been done.
15. (129) These are all the things that memory holds of what was set in motion and said; and to
such an end their affairs came, and they dismissed the holy elder from the secretum, under guard. And on the next day, which was a Sunday, those of the Church, having held a council, persuaded the emperor to condemn them to this bitter and inhuman exile, separated from one another: the holy elder to Bizye, a fortress of Thrace; his disciple to Perberis; beyond which the Roman empire has no further step of a foot, unprovided for, naked, without food, deprived of every resource for life; not approaching the sea, so that they might not have visits from the merciful. And thus they are naked and without food, having only the hope of God; exhorting all Christians, crying this out: Pray to the Lord, that God may perfect his mercy with our humiliation, and teach us that those who sail with him experience a raging sea, the vessel being shaken by winds and waves, but remaining unshaken. For he allows them to be tried by a great surge, testing their disposition towards him, so that they might cry out with a great voice: Lord, save us, we are perishing; and may learn to ascribe all things of their salvation to him alone; and not to be confident in themselves, and they might obtain a great calm, the wind and the waves having been stilled; and he gives them over into the midst of wolves, and he commands them to enter through the narrow gate, and to travel by the afflicted path; and he sets before them hunger, and thirst, and nakedness, and bonds, and prisons, and abductions, and scourges, and the cross, and nails and vinegar, and gall, and spittings, and slaps, and buffets, and mockings; and suffering and deaths of many kinds; of which the end is the all-radiant resurrection, bringing with itself peace to those persecuted for his sake; and joy, to those afflicted for his sake; and an assumption into the heavens, and an approach to the Paternal and superessential throne, and an inheritance which is above every rule and authority and power and dominion; and every name that is named, whether in this age, or in the one to come; which may we all obtain, through the prayers and intercessions of the all-hymned, all-venerable and most glorious, who is properly and by nature the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, and of the holy apostles, prophets and martyrs. ἐφθέγξατο. Ἐν δέ τῷ κινεῖσθαι περί τῆς συνόδουῬώμης λόγον, κράζει ὁ ∆ημοσθένης· Οὐ κεκύρωται ἡ σύνοδος, τοῦ συγκροτήσαντος αὐτήν καθαιρεθέντος. Καί λέγει ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ δοῦλος· Οὐ καθηρέθη, ἀλλ' ἐδιώχθη. Ποία γέγονεν ἐπί τοῖς πεπραγμένοις συνοδική καί κανονική πρᾶξις ἀσφαλῶς ἔχουσα αὐτοῦ τήν καθαίρεσιν; Πλήν ἵνα καί κανονικῶς καθῃρέθη, οὐ ποιεῖ τοῦτο πρόκριμα τοῖς ὀρθοδόξως κατά τούς θείους κανόνας κυρωθεῖσιν· οἷς καί τά γραφέντα παρά τοῦ ἐν ἁγίοις πάπα Θεοδώρου συμβαίνουσι. Καί λέγει τούτων ἀκούσας Τρώϊλος ὁ πατρίκιος· Οὔκ οἶδας τί λέγεις, ἀββᾶ· τό γενόμενον γέγονε.
ΙΕ´. (129) Ταῦτα ὅσα ἡ μνήμη κατέχει τά κεκινημένα τε καί εἰρημένα· καί εἰς
τοιοῦτον τά κατ' αὐτούς κατέληξε τέλος, ἀπολύσαντες καί τόν ἅγιον γέροντα τοῦ σεκρέτου, ἐν τῇ φρουρᾷ. Καί τῇ ἐπαύριον, ἥτις ἦν Κυριακή, συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες οἱ τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, ἔπεισαν τόν βασιλέα, ταύτην αὐτούς κατακρῖναι τήν πικράν καί ἀπάνθρωπον ἐξορίαν, διῃρημένους ἀλλήλων· τόν μέν ἅγιον γέροντα εἰς Βιζύην κάστρον τῆς Θράκης· τόν δέ μαθητήν αὐτοῦ εἰς Πέρβεριν· ὅ οὐκ ἔχει ἐξώτερον βῆμα ποδός ἡῬωμαίων βασιλεία, ἀπρονοήτους, γυμνούς, ἀτρόφους, πάσης τῆς πρός τό ζῇν ἀφορμῆς ἐστερημένους· μή ἐγγίζοντας θαλάσσῃ, ἵνα μή ἔχωσιν ἐκ τῶν ἐλεημόνων ἐπίσκεψιν. Καί οὕτως εἰσί γυμνοί καί ἄτροφοι, μόνην ἔχοντες τήν ἐλπίδα τοῦ Θεοῦ· παρακαλοῦντες πάντας τούς Χριστιανούς, τοῦτο βοῶντες· Εὔξασθε διά τόν Κύριον, ἵνα τελειώσῃ ὁ Θεός τό ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετά τῆς ταπεινώσεως ἡμῶν, καί διδάξῃ ἡμᾶς ὅτι οἱ συμπλέοντες αὐτῷ, ἠγριωμένης πεῖραν λαμβάνουσι θαλάσσης, ἀνέμοις καί κύμασι δονουμένου μέν τοῦ σκάφους, ἀκατασείστου δέ διαμένοντος. Συγχωρεῖ γάρ κλύδωνος μεγάλου αὐτούς πειραθῆναι, δοκιμάζων αὐτῶν τήν περί αὐτόν διάθεσιν, ἵνα μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ κράξωσι· Κύριε, σῶσον ἡμᾶς, ἀπολλύμεθα· καί μάθωσι πάντα μόνῳ αὐτῷ ἐπιγράφειν, τά τῆς αὐτῶν σωτηρίας· καί μή πεποιθότες ὦσιν ἐφ' ἑαυτοῖς, καί τύχωσι γαλήνης μεγάλης, τοῦ ἀνέμου καί τῶν κυμάτων κατευνασθέντων· καί εἰς μέσον λύκων αὐτούς ἐκδίδωσι, καί διά τῆς στενῆς πύλης εἰσελθεῖν, καί διά τεθλιμμένης ὁδεύειν τρίβου παρακελεύεται· καί λιμόν, καί δίψαν, καί γύμνωσιν, καί δεσμά, καί φυλακάς, καί ἀπαγωγάς, καί μάστιγας, καί σταυρόν, καί ἥλους καί ὄξος, καί χολήν, καί ἐμπτύσματα, καί ῥαπίσματα, καί κολαφίσματα, καί ἐμπαιγμούς προτείνεται· καί πάθος καί θανάτους πολυτρόπους· ὧν τέλος, ἡ παμφαής ἀνάστασις, φέρουσα μεθ' ἑαυτῆς εἰρήνην τοῖς δι' αὐτόν διωχθεῖσι· καί χαράν, τοῖς δι' αὐτόν θλιβεῖσι· καί ἀνάληψιν εἰς οὐρανούς, καί προσαγωγήν τῷ Πατρικῷ καί ὑπερουσίῳ θρόνῳ, καί λῆξιν ὑπέρ ἄνω πάσης ἀρχῆς οὖσαν καί ἐξουσίας καί δυνάμεως καί κυριότητος· καί παντός ὀνόματος ὀνομαζομένου, εἴτε ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ, εἴτε ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι· ἧς τύχοιμεν ἅπαντες, εὐχαῖς καί πρεσβείαις τῆς πανυμνήτου πανσέπτου καί ὑπερενδόξου κυρίως φύσει Θεοτόκου καί ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας, καί τῶν ἁγίων ἀποστόλων, προφητῶν καί μαρτύρων.
