of the holy Mary of Egypt, once a profligate," "of Theodora the adulteress and after this a wonderworker," and again · "of Euphrosyne the virgin who was renamed Smaragdos," and· "of Xenia, who was truly a stranger and wonderful?" Did you not hear how they left parents and wealth and their betrothed, and in lowliness and humility they served me and became saints? Why then did you not imitate these and such women as these: the prostitutes the prostitutes, the profligate the profligate, the married women the married women who had sinned, the virgins the virgins and those like yourselves?
And to the men, both kings and rulers, he will say likewise· "Did you not hear how David, having sinned, and when Nathan the prophet came to him and rebuked him for his sin, did not contradict, was not angered, did not hide his sin, but rising from his throne he fell to the ground before all the people and said· 'I have sinned against my Lord! ' and did not cease day and night from weeping and lamenting together? Did you not hear him saying· 'For I have eaten ashes like bread and mingled my drink with weeping, from the voice of my groaning my bone has clung to my flesh, I have become like a pelican of the wilderness,' and again· 'I am weary with my groaning; all the night I make my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears?' Did you not hear him saying· 'O Lord my God, (108) if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands, if I have rendered to them that rendered evil to me, may I then fall empty from my enemies, may the enemy then persecute my soul, and take it, and trample my life to the earth, and lay my glory in the dust? '. Why then did you not imitate him and those like him? Did you seem to be more glorious or richer than he, and for this reason you were unwilling to be humbled before me? Wretched and miserable ones, you, being corruptible and mortal, wished to be sole rulers and world rulers, and if there was anyone in another country unwilling to submit to you, you lorded it over him as over your lowly slave and you could not bear to endure his insubordination, even though he was your fellow servant and you had nothing more than he; but to me, your Creator and Master, how were you unwilling to submit and serve in fear and trembling? But in repaying those who sin against you, what then did you reason among yourselves concerning what you were sinning against me? that there is no one who seeks the blood of the wronged? that there is no one who sees the things done by us in secret? or that you had forgotten me and supposed that you did not have one who is above you, nor did you ever expect to be presented before me naked and with your necks bare? Did you not always hear me saying· 'Whoever wants to be first of all, let him be last of all and servant of all and deacon of all?' How did you not shudder and mourn within yourselves and were not crushed, fearing lest, coming into pride from that vain and empty hope, (109) having become transgressors of this my commandment, you would be handed over to this fire? Did you not hear how David, when being insulted by his general Shimei and called a man of blood, considering himself from his soul more lowly than him, was not angered, but even prevented those who wished to kill him? Behold, then, both Moses and Joshua the son of Nun and David and many others before my manifestation, and now after my coming, many more, whom you see glorified with me, have also become kings, as we, and rulers and generals, and because of the fear of me, having lived in humility and righteousness, they did not render evil for evil to anyone, but even when often dishonored by their peers and their subordinates, they entrusted the vengeance for this to me and
