Moreover, the Lord Jesus Himself teaches us that the whole law and the prophets hang upon the two precepts of love to God and love to our neighbour. Concerning these two commandments the following is written in the Gospel according to St. Mark: “And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him: Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him: The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel! the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.245 Deut. vi. 4, 5. This is the first commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.246 Lev. xix. 18. There is none other commandment greater than these.”247 Mark xii. 28–31. Also, in the Gospel according to St. John, He says, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love to one another.”248 John xiii. 34, 35.
36. Dicit etiam ipse Dominus Jesus, in duobus praeceptis dilectionis Dei et dilectionis proximi totam Legem Prophetasque pendere (Matth. XXII, 40). De quibus duobus praeceptis in Evangelio secundum Marcum scriptum est: Et accessit unus de scribis qui audierat illos perquirentes, et videns quoniam illis bene responderit, interrogavit eum quod esset primum omnium mandatum. Jesus autem respondit ei: Primum omnium mandatum est, Audi, Israel, Dominus Deus tuus Deus unus est; et, Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et ex tota anima tua, et ex tota mente tua: hoc est primum mandatum. Secundum autem simile illi: Diliges proximum tuum tanquam teipsum. Majus horum aliud non est mandatum (Marc. XII, 28-31). Dicit etiam in Evangelio secundum Joannem: Mandatum novum do vobis, ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos, ut et vos diligatis invicem. In hoc cognoscent omnes quia discipuli mei estis, si dilectionem habueritis ad invicem (Joan. XIII, 34, 35).
