In this year 2251, as they say, Noah planted a vineyard on Mount Lubar of Armenia. In this year 2372 Arphaxad took a wife, being 130 years old. In this year 2377 Arphaxad begat Cainan, being 135 years old. And Cainan, being 130, begat Sala in the year 2507 of the world, and Cainan lived after he begat Sala for 330 years until the year 2837 of the world. Alexander Polyhistor wishes the kingdom of the Chaldeans after the flood to begin again from this year 2405 of the world, recounting mythologically that 86 kings of the Chaldeans and Medes had reigned by means of saroi and neroi and sossoi for thirty-thousand and 4007 years, that is, in 9 saroi and 2 neroi and 8 sossoi, which some of our ecclesiastical historians have incorrectly converted again into 64 solar years and 8 months, which, as they say, corresponds to the year 2469 of the world. And after this period of the 86 kings—two Chaldean kings, Evechius and Chomasbelus, and 84 Medes—the same Polyhistor introduces Zoroaster and the 7 Chaldean kings after him, who ruled for 107 solar years, no longer by means of saroi and neroi and sossoi and the rest of the irrational mythical history, but by means of solar years. For, considering the earlier ones as gods or demigods, and those after them introducing the error, they wrote that they had in fact reigned for 89 limitless periods of time, believing the world to be eternal, contrary to the divinely inspired scriptures; but the later ones, manifest to all, [they recorded] by solar years as mortals, and not, as it seems to Panodorus and to certain others, because the years of the kings were from that time measured in solar years on account of the solar cycles having been recently recognized by Zoroaster from the writings of Enoch. Therefore, since we are persuaded by the divine scriptures that these things are false and that no kingdom existed on earth until the giant-imitating and apostate tyranny of Nebrod at the time of the tower-building, as was also shown above, and that only three men piously led the multitudes after the flood until the dispersion—I mean the righteous Noah for the remaining 350 years of his life, and his son Shem for the remaining 150 years of his life, and after him his son Arphaxad for the remaining 34, which is 534 years, which together with the 2242 of the flood becomes 2776—since, therefore, we have learned and believed these things to be so, and find the other historians in agreement, as will be shown, we hold that from the year 2776, which was the 34th year of the leadership of Arphaxad, and the 5th year of the birth of Phalek, from this year we say that the kingdom of the Chaldeans began, whose first leader was Evechius, also called Nebrod, and also the kingdom of the Egyptians, whose first king was likewise Mestrem, the founder of Egypt; wherefore we also considered it superfluous to set out a chronological table from this year 2405, according to the edition of those who have violently demonstrated that the kingdom of the Chaldeans began from this time after the flood, since the true account is not so, nor were Alexander and those around him counting days as years, but rather they were introducing limitless ages for the subversion of the divine scripture, as has often been said. Necessarily, therefore, from the year 2776 the account concerning these two kingdoms will be set out in order by us when we arrive at that point. In the year 2500 Cainan took a wife and in 2505 he begat Sala. But Eusebius did not include this Cainan in his list, having wrongly followed the Hebrew copy-text, on which account he was also in error by 130 years. Likewise Africanus also erred by not including this second Cainan, whence also in the years from Jesus son of Nave and the elders until Eli and Samuel he was forced to add nearly 140 years. concerning which the Caesarean
