But Jerusalem he calls Sodom spiritually, not literally, because of its licentiousness and false belief at that time, and Egypt, as enslaving and wronging the servants of Christ, just as that one did to Israel, where also their Lord—that is, of the two witnesses—he says was crucified. And those from every tribe who were deceived by the antichrist, seeing the slaying of the witnesses, will rejoice over them as if their king had been victorious. And the sending of gifts to one another is a sign of gladness and joy. because, he says, the two prophets tormented those who dwell upon the earth—no perceptible torment; but by mocking their sins and refuting them and cleansing their deceit they will torment them spiritually. and after the three and a half days spirits of life from God entered them, and they stood upon their 132 feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them; and they heard a great voice from heaven saying to them: Come up here, and they went up to heaven in the cloud, and their enemies saw them. And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell, and seven thousand were killed in the earthquake, and the rest, becoming fearful, gave glory to the God of heaven. The second woe has passed; behold, the third woe is coming quickly. Since all things are manifest, and are about to happen perceptibly at that time, it is tasteless to dwell on what is agreed upon. And the seventh angel blew his trumpet; and there were great voices in heaven, saying: And the kingdom of the world has become that of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever. And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell upon their faces and worshiped God, saying: We give you thanks, Lord, God, Almighty, who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign; and the nations were angry, and your wrath has come and the time for the nations to be judged, and to give the reward to your servants the prophets and to the saints and to those who fear your name, the small and the great, 133 and to destroy those who destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of his covenant was seen in his temple; and there were lightnings and voices and thunders and an earthquake and a great hail. The vision, having narrated as in a digression the things concerning the two witnesses, or rather prophets, and having gone through all things concerning them, comes to the matter at hand and whence it departed; and it departed from the future recompense of the saints, and from the fact that those from the nations are more numerous than Israel, and those in the new covenant who pleased God are more than those in the old. And he says, when the seventh angel blew his trumpet, there were voices in heaven saying that the kingdom of the world has become God's and his Christ's. God indeed always reigns, and neither began nor will ever cease reigning over heaven and earth and the visible and invisible things in them, but without beginning and without end he is master and lord of all. But since men also were called kings on the earth, and in a certain way God had those who reigned with him, when the earthly kingdom of men is dissolved at the consummation of the present age, God alone will reign. For this reason it is said that the kingdom of the world became God's and his Christ's, when the men reigning on the earth and the tyrannical demons were dissolved and had ceased. When this voice came, he says the elders worshiped God, they themselves also offering their own thanksgiving, saying, We give you thanks, Lord, God, Almighty, who is and who was. And "the one who is" is fitting to be said of the Holy Trinity, and "the one who was", even though "the one who is" is said especially concerning the Father; but "was" concerning the Son, for both the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit is He Who Is 134; and we rightly say "was" of the Father and Son and Holy

ὀνόματι τῷ ἰδίῳ, ἐκεῖνον λήψεσθε. τὴν δέ γε Ἱερουσαλὴμ πνευματικῶς, οὐ γὰρ παθητῶς, Σόδομα καλεῖ διὰ τὴν τότε ἀσέλγειαν καὶ κακοδοξίαν, καὶ Αἴγυπτον, ὡς καταδωλουμένην καὶ ἀδικοῦσαν τοὺς Χριστοῦ δούλους, καθὼς ἐκείνη τὸν Ἰσραήλ, ὅπου καὶ ὁ Κύριός φησιν αὐτῶντουτέστι τῶν δύο μαρτύρων ἐσταυρώθη. ὁρῶντες δὲ οἱ τῷ ἀντιχρίστῳ ἐκ πάσης φυλῆς ἠπατημένοι τὴν ἀναίρεσιν τῶν μαρτύρων, χαρήσονται ἐπ' αὐτοῖς ὡς τοῦ σφῶν βασιλέως νενικηκότος. τὸ δὲ καὶ δῶρα πέμπειν ἑαυτοῖς δεῖγμα εὐφροσύνης καὶ χαρμονῆς. ὅτι φησὶν οἱ δύο προφῆται ἐβασάνισαν τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆςβάσανον μὲν αἰσθητὴν οὐδεμίαν· ἐπισκώπτοντες δὲ ταῖς αὐτῶν ἁμαρτίαις καὶ διελέγχοντες καὶ τὴν ἀπάτην αὐτῶν ἀνακαθαίροντες βασανίσουσι νοητῶς. καὶ μετὰ τὰς τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ ἥμισυ πνεύματα ζωῆς ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσῆλθεν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἔστησαν ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας 132 αὐτῶν, καὶ φόβος μέγας ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τοὺς θεωροῦντας αὐτούς· καὶ ἤκουσαν φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ λέγουσαν αὐτοῖς· ἀνάβητε ὧδε, καὶ ἀνέβησαν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐν τῇ νεφέλῃ, καὶ ἐθεώρησαν αὐτοὺς οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῶν. καὶ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐγένετο σεισμὸς μέγας, καὶ τὸ δέκατον τῆς πόλεως ἔπεσε, καὶ ἀπεκτάνθησαν ἐν τῷ σεισμῷ χιλιάδες ἑπτά, καὶ οἱ λοιποί, ἔμφοβοι γενόμενοι, ἔδωκαν δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ. ἡ οὐαὶ ἡ δευτέρα ἀπῆλθεν· ἰδοὺ ἡ οὐαὶ ἡ τρίτη ἔρχεται ταχύ. πάντων δήλων τυγχανόντων, καὶ αἰσθητῶς συμβαίνειν μελλόντων κατ' ἐκεῖνον τὸν χρόνον, ἀπειροκαλία τὸ ἐνδιατρίβειν τοῖς ὡμολογημένοις. καὶ ὁ ἕβδομος ἄγγελος ἐσάλπισε· καὶ ἐγένοντο φωναὶ μεγάλαι ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, λέγοντες· καὶ ἐγένετο ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ κόσ μου τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ αὐτοῦ, καὶ βασι λεύσει εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. καὶ εἰκοσιτέσσαρες πρεσβύτεροι, οἳ ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ κάθηνται ἐπὶ τοὺς θρό νους αὐτῶν, ἔπεσον ἐπὶ τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν καὶ προσεκύνησαν τῷ Θεῷ, λέγοντες· εὐχαριστοῦμέν σοι, Κύριε, ὁ Θεός, ὁ παντο κράτωρ, ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν, ὅτι εἴληφας τὴν δύναμίν σου τὴν μεγά λην καὶ ἐβασίλευσας· καὶ τὰ ἔθνη ὠργίσθησαν, καὶ ἦλθεν ἡ ὀργή σου καὶ ὁ καιρὸς τῶν ἐθνῶν κριθῆναι, καὶ δοῦναι τὸν μισθὸν τοῖς δούλοις σου τοῖς προφήταις καὶ τοῖς ἁγίοις καὶ τοῖς φοβουμένοις τὸ ὄνομά σου, τοῖς μικροῖς καὶ τοῖς μεγά 133 λοις, καὶ διαφθεῖραι τοὺς διαφθείροντας τὴν γῆν. καὶ ἠνοί γει ὁ ναὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ, καὶ ὤφθη ἡ κιβωτὸς τῆς διαθήκης αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐγένοντο ἀστραπαὶ καὶ φωναὶ καὶ βρονταὶ καὶ σεισμὸς καὶ χάλαζα μεγάλη. ὡς ἐν παρεξόδῳ τὰ κατὰ τοὺς δύο μάρτυρας ἤτοι προφῆτας διηγησαμένη ἡ ὀπτασία, καὶ πάντα τὰ περὶ αὐτῶν ἐπεξελθοῦσα, ἐπὶ τὸ προκείμενον καὶ ὅθεν ἐξελήλυθεν ἔρχεται· ἐξελήλυθε δὲ ἐκ τῆς τῶν ἁγίων ἀντιδόσεως τῆς μελλούσης, καὶ ὅτι πλείους οἱ ἐξ ἐθνῶν τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ οἱ ἐν τῇ νέᾳ εὐαρεστήσαντες τῷ Θεῷ παρὰ τοὺς ἐν τῇ παλαιᾷ. καί φησιν τοὺ ἑβδόμου σαλπίσαντος ἀγγέλου, ἐγένοντο φωναὶ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ λέγουσαι ὅτι γέγονεν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ κόσμου τῷ Θεῷ καὶ τῷ Χριστῷ αὐτοῦ. ἀεὶ μὲν ὁ Θεὸς βασιλεύει, καὶ οὔτε ἤρξατο οὔτε μὴν παύσεται βασιλεύων οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς καὶ τῶν ἐν αὐτοῖς ὁρατῶν τε καὶ νοητῶν, ἀλλὰ ἀνάρχως τε καὶ ἀτελευτήτως ἐστὶ πάντων δεσπότης καὶ κύριος. ἐπειδὴ δὲ καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι βασιλεῖς ἐχρημάτισαν· ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, καὶ τρόπον τινὰ εἶχεν ὁ Θεὸς τοὺς συμβασιλεύοντας αὐτῷ, λυομένης τῆς ἐπιγείου τῶν ἀνθρώπων βασιλείας τῇ συντελείᾳ τοῦ παρόντος αἰῶνος, μόνος ὁ Θεὸς βασιλεύσει. διὸ εἴρηται ὅτι ἐγένετο ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ κόσμου τῷ Θεῷ καὶ τῷ Χριστῷ αὐτοῦ, λυθέντων καὶ παυσαμένων τῶν ἐν τῇ γῇ βασιλευόντων ἀνθρώπων καὶ τῶν τυραννούντων δαιμόνων. ἧς γενομένης φωνῆς, προσεκύνησάν φησι τῷ Θεῷ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι, ἰδίαν καὶ αὐτοὶ προσαγαγόντες εὐχαριστίαν, εὐχαριστοῦμέν σοι λέγοντες, Κύριε, ὁ Θεός, ὁ παντοκράτωρ, ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν. καὶ τὸ ὢν ἐπὶ τῆς Ἁγίας ἁρμόζει λέγεσθαι Τριάδος, καὶ τὸ ὁ ἦν, εἰ καὶ τὰ μάλιστα περὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς εἴρηται τὸ ὁ ὤν· περὶ δὲ τοῦ Υἱοῦ τὸ ἦν, καὶ γὰρ ὤν ἐστιν 134 ὅτε Πατὴρ καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον· καὶ τὸ ἦν καλῶς λέγομεν ἐπὶ τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ Υἱοῦ καὶ Ἁγίου
