he said: "Let your eyes look straight ahead, and let your eyelids direct what is right; make straight paths for your feet." But the voice of the Gospel teaches more imperatively concerning chastity, saying: "Everyone who looks at another man's wife to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. and he who marries," he says, "one divorced from her husband commits adultery, and whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her commit adultery." Further, Solomon says: "Can a man take fire in his garment, and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be burned? So is he who goes in to a married woman; he will not be guiltless." And that we should not only be well-disposed to those of our own tribe, as some think, Isaiah the prophet said: "Say to those who hate you and to those who detest you, 'You are our brothers,' so that the name of the Lord may be glorified and be seen in their gladness." And the Gospel: "Love," it says, "your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even robbers and tax collectors do this." And it teaches those who do good not to boast, so that they may not be men-pleasers. "For let not," it says, "your left hand know what your right hand is doing." Moreover, the divine Word also commands us to be subject to rulers and authorities and to pray for them, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life. and it teaches us to render to all all things, to whom honor, honor; to whom fear, fear; to whom tribute, tribute; to owe no one anything, except only to love all. Consider, then, if those who learn such things are able to live indifferently and to be mixed up in unlawful unions, or, the most impious thing of all, to partake of human flesh, when indeed it is forbidden for us to see even the spectacles of the gladiators, so that we may not become participants and accomplices of murders. But neither ought we to see the other shows, so that our eyes and our ears may not be defiled, by becoming participants of the speeches given there. For if one should speak about cannibalism, there the children of Thyestes and Tereus are being eaten; and if about adultery, not only concerning men but also concerning gods, whom they proclaim with sweet voices, with honors and prizes, it is performed in tragedies among them. But far be it from Christians to think of doing any such thing, among whom temperance is present, self-control is practiced, monogamy is observed, chastity is guarded, injustice is driven out, sin is rooted out, righteousness is cultivated, law governs, piety is practiced, God is confessed, truth presides, grace preserves, peace protects, the holy Word guides, wisdom teaches, life directs, God reigns. Therefore, though having many things to say concerning our way of life and of the ordinances of God the creator of all creation, for now we think it sufficient to have mentioned these things, so that you especially might take note from what you have read up to this point, that as you have become a lover of learning until
