According to Luke; for he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles. That, in it, it was written both concerning the Father, and concerning his only-begotten Son thus. Concerning the Father, Hosea: “And God said to him,” he says, “Call her name, Not-pitied; for I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel, but I will utterly oppose them. But I will have mercy on the sons of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God.” In the song of Hannah: “My heart has been strengthened in the Lord, my horn is exalted in my God.” David in Psalm 107: “Will not you, O God, go out with our armies? Give us help from trouble, for vain is the salvation of man. In God we shall do valiantly, and he shall bring to nothing those who afflict us;” and again: “By my God I will leap over a wall;” and again: “In God I will praise my words.” Paul to the Colossians: “Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light; who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom 39.936 of the Son of his love; in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins; and again: “Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ;” and again: “But if you are called a Jew, and rest in the law, and make your boast in God;” and elsewhere: “One God, through whom are all things, and we for him;” and again: “In God who created all things;” and again: “Now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come to you;” and again: “Pray in God;” and again: “He that does truth comes to the light, that it may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” Concerning the Son, Paul to the Colossians: “For in him were all things created, in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible; whether thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers, all things were created through him and for him; and he is before all things, and in him all things consist.” To the Corinthians in the first Epistle: “But you were washed, but you were justified, but you were sanctified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God;” and in the second: “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and makes manifest the fragrance of his knowledge through us;” and again: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature;” And to the Romans: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death;” to the same: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God, being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” And to the Hebrews: “God, who in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by his Son.” Peter in an Epistle: “But the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus”

CHAP. 24. Moreover, also the Greeks, who are wise in their own conceit and beyond all stupidity,

who are drunk with the notion of polytheism, and persuade themselves that they alone are very learned 39.937, but are ignorant about the essential point above all, and having no accurate knowledge concerning the blessed Trinity in unity, similarly to them, as the Scripture says, “When a wicked man comes into the depth of evil, he becomes a scorner” through a voluntary acuteness of superstition, forsooth, and curiosity, for the confirmation of their polytheism, or rather atheism, they wrongly rely upon the aforesaid saying of the Apostle: “If there are some that are called gods, whether in heaven, or on earth; as there are many gods, and many lords;” and on the prophetic saying: “You shall not revile the gods;” and, “The Lord, the God of gods, has spoken;” no longer seeing these two things: first, that the Apostle wrote before the mentioned saying: “There is no God but one;” and second, that

οἱ πολυθεΐας δόξῃ καταμεθύοντες, καὶ ἑαυτοὺς πείθοντες, ὅτιπερ μόνοι εἰσὶν πολυμα 39.937 θεῖς, ἀμαθαίνοντες δὲ περὶ τὸ καίριον παρὰ πάντας, καὶ οὐδεμίαν ἀκριβῆ περὶ τῆς ἐν μονάδι μακαρίας Τριάδος εἴδησιν ἔχοντες, αὐτῶν παραπλησίως τῇ λεγούσῃ Γραφῇ, «Ἀσεβὴς ἐμπεσὼν εἰς βάθος κακῶν, καταφρονεῖ» δι' ἐθελοακρότητα δεισιδαιμονίας δῆθεν καὶ περιεργίας, εἰς βεβαίωσιν τῆς πολυθεΐας, μᾶλλον δὲ ἀθεΐας αὐτῶν ἐπερείδονται κακῶς τῇ προλεχθείσῃ τοῦ Ἀποστόλου φωνῇ· «Εἴ τινές εἰσι λεγόμενοι θεοὶ, εἴτε ἐν οὐρανῷ, εἴτε ἐπὶ γῆς· ὥσπερ εἰσὶ θεοὶ πολλοὶ, καὶ κύριοι πολλοί·» καὶ τῇ προφητικῇ, τῇ φασκούσῃ· «Θεοὺς οὐ κακολογήσεις·» καὶ, «Θεὸς θεῶν Κύριος ἐλάλησεν·» οὐκ ἔτι βλέποντες δύο ταῦτα· ἓν μὲν, ὅτι ὁ Ἀπόστολος ἔγραψε πρὸ τοῦ μνησθέντος ῥητοῦ· «Οὐδεὶς Θεὸς, εἰ μὴ εἷς·» ἕτερον δὲ, ὅτι
