Protag. Protagoras used to say, that there is nothing, neither art without practice, nor practice without art.

Epicur. One should not pretend to philosophize, but truly philosophize. For we do not need to seem to be healthy, but to be healthy in truth.

Demonact. The same man, being asked who his teacher had been, "The tribunal of the Athenians," he said, indicating that experience through deeds is better than any sophistic teaching.

DISCOURSE 18. Concerning good fortune and misfortune. 15Ε_174 Luke 16. you received your good things in your lifetime, and

Lazarus likewise the bad; but now, he is comforted, and you are in anguish. Corinth. 4. To the present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are poorly clothed,

and are beaten, and are homeless, working with our own hands. Sirach 12. In a man's good times, his enemies are in sorrow, and in his misfortune even

a friend will be separated. Sirach 18. Remember a time of famine in a time of plenty; poverty and

want in a day of wealth. From morning until evening the time changes. Sirach 9. Do not envy the glory of sinners. From an Epigram. As that which bears you bears [you] to be borne, bear it; but if you disobey, You will both harm yourself, and that which bears you will bear [you]. Of the Theologian. When you are sailing well, especially remember the storm. Who knows if one is punished for wickedness, and another, being lifted up, is exalted; but

not the contrary, that one is exalted for evil, and another is tested for virtue? 15Ε_176 Chrysost. One must be persuaded of one thing only, that for our benefit

all things are administered by God. But as to the manner, no longer to seek it, nor in ignorance to be vexed or disheartened. For it is neither possible to know these things, nor profitable; the one, because we are mortal; the other, because we are quickly lifted to despair.

Of Nilus. One must not be arrogant over every fall and every sin of a man, nor ever rejoice over one who has been tripped up, even if such a one seems to be a deadly enemy.Mourn for the sinner who prospers; for the sword of justice is stretched out for him.

Why do the just grow weak and poor, while the unjust are exalted and grow rich? I say, so that the one group may be crowned, and the other eternally punished.

When all your affairs are going well, expect a change; and again, when you are surrounded by unexpected 832 misfortunes, imagine good and better things.

Of Philo. To rejoice at the misfortunes of others, even if sometimes just, is still not human.

Pain is not without consolation, if faring well is not without instruction. For the greatest help for those in misfortune is the hope of change, and the better things in

view. A blow becomes a lesson to the prudent, and often better than prosperity is

adversity. The greatest misfortune for a man faring ill is also the lack of one who will restore him. A great medicine for the unfortunate is mercy brought forth from the soul; and

to suffer along genuinely, lightens the misfortune a great deal.

Νείλου. Οὐ χρή ἐπί παντί πτώματι καί πάσῃ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἐπαίρεσθαι, οὐδ᾿ ἐπιχαίρειν ποτέ τῷ ὑποσκελισθέντι, κἄν εἰ δοκεῖ ὁ τοιοῦτος ἐχθρός φόνιος εἶναι.Θρήνει τόν ἁμαρτωλόν εὐθηνοῦντα· τό ξίφος γάρ αὐτῷ τῆς δίκης ἐπιτείνεται.

∆ιατί δίκαιοι ἀσθενοῦσι καί πένονται, ἄδικοι δέ αἴρονται καί πλουτοῦσι; Φημί, ἵνα οἱ μέν στεφανωθῶσιν, οἱ δέ αἰωνίως τιμωρηθῶσιν.

Πάντων σου τῶν πραγμάτων κατευοδουμένων, ἐκδέχου μεταβολήν· καί πάλιν ποτέ ὑπό ἀπροσδοκήτων 832 συμφορῶν κυκλούμενος, φαντάζου τά χρηστά καί κρείττονα.

Φίλων. Χαίρειν ἐπί ταῖς ἑτέρων ἀτυχίαις, εἰ καί δίκαιόν ποτε, ἀλλ᾿ οὐκ ἀνθρώπινον.

Οὐ μή τό ἀλγεῖν ἀπαραμύθητον, εἰ μήτε τό εὖ πράττειν ἀπαιδαγώγητον. Μεγίστη γάρ ἐπικουρία τοῦ ἀτυχοῦσι, μεταβολῆς ἐλπίς, καί τό κρεῖττον ἐν

ὀφθαλμοῖς κείμενον. Πληγή τοῖς εὖ φρονοῦσι παίδευμα γίνεται, καί κρείττων εὐημερίας πολλάκις

κακοπάθεια. Μεγίστη συμφορά ἀνθρώπῳ δυσπραγοῦντι, καί ἡ ἐρημία τοῦ ἀνακτησομένου. Μέγα τῷ ἀτυχοῦντι φάρμακον ἔλεος ἀπό ψυχῆς εἰσφερόμενος· καί τό

συναλγεῖν γνησίως, πολύ τι κουφίζει τῆς συμφορᾶς.
