He ordains Proclus as bishop of Cyzicus; whom the Cyzicenes did not receive, and they ordained a certain monk named Dalmatius against the will of Sisinnius. But Proclus, not having his own church in Constantinople, at the urging of Sisinnius, was excelling in his teachings. In the same year the persecution against the Christians in Persia ceased. 22. 15. 6. 2. 12. 15. 7. In this year Philip, a presbyter of Side, having written a Christian history in 36 books, greatly attacks Sisinnius because Sisinnius was preferred over Philip for the episcopacy along with Proclus; and immediately Sisinnius died. 88 Years of the world 5923. Years of the divine incarnation 423. Emperor of the Romans Theodosius, 42 years. 23. King of the Persians Vararanes, 20 years. 16. Bishop of Rome Celestine, 10 years. 7. Bishop of Constantinople Nestorius, 3 years. 1. Bishop of Jerusalem Praulius, 20 years. 13. Bishop of Alexandria Cyril, 32 years. 16. Bishop of Antioch John, 18 years. 8. In this year, when Sisinnius, bishop of Constantinople, fell asleep, Nestorius, a Germanician by birth, succeeded to the episcopacy. As soon as he ascended the throne, immediately his false belief and his perverted mind in doctrines were shown. For he published a homily about faith to his syncellus, ordering him to preach it in church, which was as follows: "Let no one call Mary Theotokos; for Mary was a human being, and it is impossible for God to be born of a human being." A certain Eusebius, a scholasticus of the imperial court of Constantinople, first took hold of this saying, whence many of the Byzantines were disturbed. But Nestorius, hastening to confirm the saying, everywhere cast out the term Theotokos, saying the Lord was a mere man. And on one Sunday, while Nestorius was presiding, Proclus was prompted to explain and delivered a homily on the Theotokos, the beginning of which is: "A virginal festival today, brothers." Then the impious Nestorius became hateful to all on account of his pride and false belief; for he also had a certain Anastasius, a presbyter of Antioch, whom he greatly esteemed as being of like mind, a most audacious man, blaspheming in church the ever-virgin Theotokos. Eusebius of Dorylaeum first spoke against him. And acting thus he raised many tumults and disturbances. In the same year also the fearful wonder of the seven holy youths in Ephesus occurred, they having risen after 182 years. 24. 17. 8. 2. 14. 17. 9. In this year Cyril, the bishop of the Alexandrians, having learned of the blasphemies of Nestorius, writes to him exhorting and admonishing 89 him as a brother to abstain from his perverted doctrines and to hold to the orthodox faith. But Nestorius sent back an insolent and blasphemous reply. Then Cyril writes to the pope of Rome, Celestine, about Nestorius and makes clear to him the blasphemies written to him by Nestorius. Then Celestine writes to Nestorius, having set for him a deadline of 10 days, so that he might cease from his blasphemies and repent; and if he persisted in his false doctrine he would no longer be a priest in communion. Likewise both Celestine and Cyril write to John, the archbishop of Antioch, and to Juvenal of Jerusalem about Nestorius and his heresy. And John writes to Nestorius, advising him to abandon the heresy, reminding him of the saying of the apostle: "God sent forth his Son, born of a woman." But Nestorius, knowing that the patriarchs would not tolerate remaining silent when the churches were so disturbed, prepared the emperor to write an imperial letter to Cyril full of rebukes, and thinking to strike him with this, he rather roused him. For rising up, he writes to the emperor and to his sisters about the orthodox faith and the false doctrine of Nestorius, at the same time also requesting that an ecumenical council be held for the purpose of
