of divinely inspired words; and yet the discourse has touched on almost none of the main points; for it is possible to discover much by reasoning about the sizes and distances of the sun and moon, for one who has not cursorily investigated their activities and powers. We must, therefore, graciously confess our own weakness, so that the greatest of created things may not be measured by our word, but from the few things that have been said, to reason with ourselves how many and how great are the things that have been omitted. Do not, therefore, measure the moon by the eye, but by reason, which is much more accurate than the eyes for finding the truth. Certain ridiculous myths, raved about by guzzling old women, have been spread everywhere, that the moon, moved from her own seat by some sorcery, is brought down to earth. How then will the incantation of sorcerers move that which the Most High himself has established? And what place could have received it when it was dragged down? Do you wish to receive the proof of its size from small indications? The cities throughout the inhabited world, though separated from each other by the greatest distance, with their streets laid out towards the east, all receive the moonlight equally. If it were not opposite all of them, it would certainly have illuminated those directly in the narrow streets, but it would have struck those that exceed its breadth with slanting rays carried to the sides. This is what can be seen happening with lamps in houses. When several people stand around it, the shadow of the one standing directly in front extends straight up, but the others on each side incline. So that if the lunar body were not something immense and exceeding in size, it would not be extended opposite to all in the same way. For when it rises from the equinoctial regions, both those who dwell in the frozen zone and lie under the revolutions of the Bear partake of it equally, and the neighbors in the hollows of the south of the torrid zone; and being extended opposite all of them in breadth, it provides the clearest testimony of its size. Who then will deny that its body is immense, being equal to so great and so many distances at once? So much for the sizes of the sun and moon. But may He who granted us the intellect to learn from the smallest of creation the great wisdom of the Artisan, grant us also from the great things to receive greater conceptions of the Creator. And yet in comparison to the Maker, sun and moon are on the level of a gnat and an ant. For it is not possible to get a view worthy of the greatness of the God of all from these things, but to be led on by them through certain small and faint manifestations, just as through each of the smallest things among animals or plants. Let us be satisfied with what has been said. I for my part give thanks to the One who granted me this small ministry of the word, and you to the One who nourishes you with spiritual food, who even now has nourished you, as with a kind of barley loaf, with the humbleness of our voice; and may He nourish you forever, granting you the manifestation of the Spirit according to the proportion of faith, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
HOMILY VII. Concerning creeping things
7.1 And God said, Let the waters bring forth creeping things with living souls after their kind,
and fowl that fly according to the firmament of heaven after their kind. After the creation of the luminaries, the waters are then filled with living creatures, so that this portion also might be adorned. For the earth received the from its own growths
