Evagrius. Every misfortune is light for a man who is not light-minded. Plutarch. Neither does a golden-footed couch benefit a sick man, nor

a foolish man, conspicuous good fortune. Doctors must be present for the sick; but for the unfortunate, friends. 15Ε_178 In drunkenness they behave badly; but in misfortunes

most people lose their minds. To put a burden on a sick person, or good fortune on an uneducated soul, is the same thing. Conspicuous fortunes, just like violent winds, cause great

shipwrecks. Just as those sailing in fair weather also have things ready for a storm; so too

those who are prudent in good fortune have also prepared well their resources against misfortune. The diet of a sick person, and the good fortune of a fool, are displeasing. Fortune resembles a poor judge of a contest; for often the one doing nothing

it crowns. Fortune, like an archer, sometimes hits when shooting at us, as if

at some target; and at other times it hits things lying very near to us. Hide misfortune, so that you do not gladden your enemies. Isocrates. Reproach no one for a misfortune; for fortune is common to all, and the future is

unseen. Consider nothing of human affairs to be certain. For thus you will neither be overjoyed when fortunate,

nor overcome with grief when unfortunate. Even a good helmsman is sometimes shipwrecked; and a worthy man is unfortunate. Democritus. The one who succeeds with a son-in-law, has found 833 a son; but the one who fails,

has lost a daughter as well. Socrates. It is good for the fire to appear bright on the hearth; but for the

misfortune, the mind. Socrates. The intemperate in illnesses, and the foolish in

good fortunes, are hard to cure. The same, being asked, "What grieves the good?" said, "The good fortune 15Ε_180

of wicked men; for unexpected prosperity is wont to provoke deeds of hubris. Whom fortune insults, thus finds lashes even from the gentle. Demonax. Neither can the unmusical with instruments, nor the uneducated with fortunes

harmonize. A rout shows the truly courageous man; and misfortune, the

prudent man. From Favorinus. Being fortunate, do not be arrogant; being in want, do not be humbled;

know how to bear the changes of fortune nobly. Alexander. Alexander the king, seeing Diogenes sleeping in a jar, said:

O jar full of sense; and the philosopher, rising up, said: O greatest king. I want a drop of fortune, rather than a jar of sense, Without which, sense is unfortunate. To whom one of the well-disposed replied, A drop of sense for me rather, than an abyss of fortune, Without which, sense is unfortunate. Epicurus. The humble soul is made vain by successes; and by

misfortunes is cast down.
