was tested for sanctifying temperance; and every one of the saints who was unwillingly afflicted in this age, was afflicted by certain such dispensations, so that through the weakness that was permitted to be brought upon them, they might tread upon the proud and apostate dragon, that is, the devil.(140) For patience is a work of trial for each of the saints. THEOD. By the truth of God, you have spoken well; and I confess the benefit; and I have always sought to converse with you on such matters; but since on another matter I and my lords, the patricians-to-be, have come to you, and we have traveled such great distances, we ask you to accept what is proposed by us, and to make the whole world rejoice. MAX. What are these things, my lord, and who am I, and from where, that my assent to what is proposed to me should make the whole world rejoice? THEOD. By the truth of our Lord Jesus Christ, what I say to you, both I and my lords, the patricians-to-be, have heard from the mouth of our lord the patriarch and of the pious Lord of the world. MAX. Command, my lords, to say what you wish, and what you have heard.
3. THEOD. The emperor and the patriarch ask through us, to learn from you, for
what reason you do not have communion with the throne of Constantinople. MAX. Do you have a written commission about this from the most pious emperor, or from the patriarch? THEOD. You ought not, my lord, to disbelieve us. For even if I am lowly, I am called a bishop; and my lords are part of the senate; and we have not come to test you; God forbid. MAX. In whatever way you have come to your servant, I speak without any reservation the reason for which I do not have communion with the throne of Constantinople. Nevertheless, even if it were for others to ask me for what reason, it is for you, who know the reason more surely than I.
4. You know the innovations that occurred from the sixth indiction of the
past cycle, beginning from Alexandria through the nine chapters set forth by Cyrus, who I know not how became president there, which were confirmed by the throne of Constantinople; and the other alterations, both additions and subtractions, which were made synodically by those who presided over the Church of the Byzantines, I mean Sergius, and Pyrrhus, and Paul; which innovations the whole world knows. For this reason I, your servant, do not have communion with the Church of Constantinople. Let the stumbling blocks placed by the aforementioned men be removed, along with those very men who placed them, as God said; And cast the stones out of the way, and the smooth and worn way of the Gospel, free from all thorny heretical evil, just as I was finding it, I travel without any human exhortation. But as long as the presidents of Constantinople pride themselves on the stumbling blocks that have been placed (141), and on those who placed them, there is no argument or way that will persuade me to have communion with them.
5. THEOD. For what evil do we confess, that you should be separated from our communion? MAX. That
by saying there is one energy of the divinity and humanity of our God and Savior Jesus Christ, you confuse the doctrine of both the theology and the economy. For if one must be persuaded by the holy Fathers, they say, Of whom the energy is one, of these also the essence
