has chosen.” But after a time, those things which Martha eagerly did in her service brought her to that gift; for she also received a divine power in her soul. And what is surprising, if those who came to the Lord and clung to him physically received power, when the apostles spoke a word and the Holy Spirit fell upon those who believed? Cornelius, from the word which he heard, received power. How much more, when the Lord spoke a word to Mary or to Zacchaeus or to the sinful woman, who, letting down her hair, wiped the feet of the Lord, or to the Samaritan woman or to the thief, did power come to be, and the Holy Spirit was mingled with their souls. And now those who love God and leave all things and persevere in prayer are taught in secret what they do not know. For the truth itself is revealed to them according to their choice and teaches them that “I am the truth.” For the apostles themselves, abiding with the Lord before the cross, saw great signs, how lepers were cleansed and the dead were raised, but they did not know how divine power works and serves in the heart, and that they were to be spiritually reborn and mingled with the heavenly soul and become a new creation. But because of the signs which he performed, they loved the Lord. Therefore the Lord said to them: Why do you marvel at the signs? I give you a great inheritance, which the whole world does not have. So they were astonished at his words, until he rose from the dead and offered up his body for us above the heavens; and then the Paraclete Spirit entered and was mingled in their souls. And the truth itself reveals itself to faithful souls, and the heavenly man comes with your man and becomes one communion. Therefore, as many as are in service and eagerly do all things for the zeal and love of God, that very thing after some time brings them to the knowledge of the truth itself; for the Lord reveals himself to their souls and teaches them the working of the Holy Spirit. Glory and worship to the Father and Son and Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. HOMILY 13. 1 God created all visible things and gave them to men for rest and enjoyment, and he gave them a law of righteousness. But since the coming of Christ, God seeks another fruit and another righteousness: purity of heart, a good conscience, kind words, venerable and good thoughts, and all the righteous deeds of the saints. For the Lord says: “Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. In the law it is written: You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, neither desire nor be angry.” For it is necessary for the one who wants to become a friend and brother and son of Christ to do something more than other men, that is, to dedicate the heart itself, the mind itself, and to raise up his thoughts to God. And so God secretly gives life and help to the heart and entrusts himself to it. For when one gives the secret things, that is, the mind and thoughts, to God, not being occupied nor wandering elsewhere, but compelling himself, then the Lord deems him worthy of mysteries in greater holiness and purity, and gives him heavenly food and spiritual drink. Just as if someone possesses much property and slaves and children, he gives one kind of food to the slaves and another to his own children born from his seed (since the children inherit from the father and eat with him,
