Akecheres, 12 years, 5 months. and after him Akecheres, 12 years, 3 months. and Armais, 4 years, 1 month. and after him Ramesses, one year, 4 months. and after him Armesses Miammou, 60 years and 2 months. and after him Amenophis, 19 years, months. and Sethos and Ramesses, 60 years, who they say had a great force of cavalry and a naval armament in their own times. The Hebrews, at that time sojourning in the land of Egypt and enslaved by the king who has been mentioned before, Tethmosis, built for him fortified cities, both Pithom and Ramesses and On, which is the city of the Sun; so that the Hebrews are shown to be more ancient than the famous cities of the Egyptians at that time, who are also our forefathers, from whom we have the sacred books, which are more ancient than all writers, as we have said before. The country Egypt was named after king Sethos; for Sethos, they say, is called Aigyptos. And Sethos had a brother whose name was Armais; he is called Danaus, who came to Argos from Egypt, whom the other writers mention as being very ancient. But Manetho, who wrote much nonsense about the Egyptians, and moreover spoke blasphemies against both Moses and the Hebrews with him, as if they were expelled from Egypt because of leprosy, did not manage to state the chronology accurately. For in calling them shepherds and enemies of the Egyptians, he said "shepherds" unwillingly, being convicted by the truth; for our forefathers who sojourned in Egypt were indeed shepherds, but not lepers. For having come to the land called Judaea, where they also dwelt in the meantime, it is made clear in what manner their priests, by the command of God, attending to the temple, then healed every disease so that they even cured lepers and every blemish. Solomon the king of Judaea built a temple. That Manetho was mistaken about the times is clear from his own statements; but also concerning the king who expelled them, Pharaoh by name. For he did not reign over them any longer; for having pursued the Hebrews with his army, he was drowned in the Red Sea. Moreover, he lies also about those whom he said were shepherds who had made war on the Egyptians; for 313 years before they departed from Egypt and inhabited from that time the land, which is still now called Judaea, before Danaus also arrived at Argos. And that most of the Greeks consider him more ancient than the others is clear. So Manetho, unwillingly, has indicated two aspects of the truth to us through his writings: first, by acknowledging them to be shepherds, and second, by saying that they had come out of the land of Egypt; so that from these records it is also shown that Moses and those with him are nine hundred or even a thousand years before the Trojan War.
