of Israel.” 2.3.101 And see if it was not by this very trust that the disciples and apostles of our Savior, who came forth from the nation of the Jews and were left over from the falling away of Israel, taking no account of “the rulers of this age” or of the rulers of the people of the circumcision who had long wronged them, went out to all the nations preaching the word of Christ, and with trust in God, since according to the prophecy they were “trusting in the holy God of Israel in truth,” for not deceitfully nor with hypocrisy, but with truth they gave their whole selves over to hope, and not only went forth from their own land, but also accomplished what was set before them. 2.3.103 And this very thing again, what was left, as it were the seed from the falling away of Jacob, has become trusting “in a mighty God,” and this very remnant of their whole nation, which became “as the sand of the sea” but not as the stars of heaven, was deemed worthy of the salvation that is from God, just as the apostle testified, saying: “But Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, ‘Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved.’” 2.3.104 For two promises were given to Abraham through the oracle concerning those who would be born from him, that they would be as the stars of heaven and as the sand of the sea; the God-loving shining like the heavenly luminaries, such as were the ancient prophets and the apostles of our Savior, to whom he testified, saying, “You are the light of the world”; while the earthborn and groveling were compared to the sand of the earth, 2.3.105 reasonably in these things the prophetic word says: when the whole multitude of the sons of Israel, having fallen from the dignity and greatness of virtue, having become entirely groveling, is compared to the sand of the sea, then indeed only their remnant will be saved. Concerning this remnant, we have spoken at great length. 2.3.106 And he says these things will be when the Lord himself, cutting short and completing a word, will make it throughout the whole inhabited world, clearly presenting the gospel proclamation, in which, with the whole Mosaic period of images and symbols and bodily worships being removed, the concise word of the gospel delivered to all men confirmed the truth of the prophecy. 2.3.107 41. “And it shall be in that day, the root of Jesse and he who rises up to rule the nations, in him the nations will hope. And his rest shall be honor. And it shall be in that day, the Lord will again show his hand, to be zealous for and to seek the remaining remnant of his people, which shall be left by the Assyrians, and from Egypt, and from Babylonia, and from Ethiopia, and from the Elamites, and from the rising of the sun, and from the islands of the sea. And he will raise a sign for the nations, and will gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” 2.3.108 Often, when certain things are said to be about to happen on a notable day, that is, in a manifestation of time, we have shown by reasoning that the sequence of what is indicated refers to the presence of God; at which time, when the entire nation of the Jews falls away, the divine words declare that a few who are left from among them will be saved. 2.3.109 Indeed, the passage at hand presents most clearly both the day and the time signified by it and the events that have happened at that time; for in prophesying the birth of Christ, which was to be from the seed of David, it also proclaims beforehand the falling away of the Jews. And it says thus: 2.3.110 “Behold, the master, the Lord Sabaoth, will throw the glorious into confusion with strength, and the lofty will be humbled, and the lofty will fall by the sword, and Lebanon with the lofty will fall.” And here it speaks enigmatically of Lebanon as Jerusalem, as we have shown in other places, which the word threatens will fall with all the venerable and glorious within it.
