others may profit? For if they assign any servile tasks to me, I will first plead inability; (119) and if they compel me, I will say to them: "And if I cannot do this, are you to choke me, are you to drive me out, if I am not strong enough?:". And so I will pretend to weep, I will shout, I will feign weakness of the knees, I will pretend to be dizzy, I will say that my head is troubled by bile, and for this reason I will be able, seemingly with good cause, to eat even from the morning, I will begin to curse and to blaspheme and I will contradict everything commanded of me and grumble at the same time; and in any case, having grown weary, they will leave me be even if unwillingly. But if they should ever give me some menial work and a service likewise, I will despise it. For example, if they order me to serve the mules, I will pretend not to know how to serve them and I will leave them ungroomed and uncared for along with all their blankets; and either they will be forced to leave me be, or they will give another to help me, and with that one performing all the duties, I, doing some little thing, will be at rest. But if they order me to become a baker, I will protest beforehand with hypocrisy, so that I may not be condemned as disobedient, saying to them: "I, fathers, have never seen how bread is made," and so having gone away I will make the bread like mud for them, and they, not being able to bear eating it, will no longer compel me to such a service". But if they assign him to serve in the kitchen, he does not know how to humble himself to his superior and make a prostration, but says to him insolently: "Lord have mercy! Father, out of everyone did you choose only me for the dishonorable tasks? Are there not also other brothers in the monastery?" and these things he says, in order to evade the service commanded of him; (120) but if he sees the insistence of the abbot, for the time being he goes away, not for God's sake but fearing the punishment and the lashes, and going away and grumbling he says to himself: "They will have perfect and good things to eat from what I cook! If I do not make them rise from the table fasting or vomit whatever they may eat, it is not me!" and simply so does the wretch do everything with great madness. And he likewise makes the brothers' cooking and their pulses smoky and burns them, throwing everything unwashed and uncleaned into the pots, and he throws salt in them beyond measure making them brine, and he allows their hot water to be lukewarm so that, disgusted, they might be agitated to vomit their food; and if a brother says something to him or sends something to be cooked and prepared, he says shamelessly: "Does he not spare me? Some master has commanded his slave! Woe, let him not eat until then, until I draw near or prepare it!". And while he acts this way in all things, he is found leaping forward and running to only those services and duties where he knows he has a way to steal or embezzle something; and if he is not preferred more than all the others, he is openly grieved and secretly grumbles in distress to those like him; but when he is commanded for such tasks, he rises up as if from the dead and from Hades and immediately his face brightens and his eyes become cheerful. And even if from great wickedness he wishes to dissemble so as not to be condemned, not even so can he escape the notice of those who see; for if from nowhere else, he is recognized by his not grumbling or procrastinating a little, as was his habit to do (121) in all services. For he is altogether afraid in this to say anything, lest another be sent instead of him and he be left idle.

This being the case, then, with both of them, the one submitting in obedience of a good soul and humbled heart, unweariedly, without grumbling, without deceit, without theft, without causing scandal, but the other doing the opposite of these, as has been written, if

ἀποκερδαίνωσιν ἄλλοι; Ἐάν γάρ καί εἰς δουλείας τινάς μοι ἐπιτάξωσι, προβαλοῦμαι πρῶτον ἀδυναμίαν· (119) ἐάν δέ καί ἀναγκάσωσί με, εἴπω πρός αὐτούς· "Καί ἐάν μή δύνωμαι τοῦτο ποιῆσαι, ἵνα με ἀποπνίξητε, ἵνα με διώξητε, ἐάν μή ἰσχύω:". Καί οὕτω προσποιήσομαι κλαίειν, κραυγάσω, ἔκλυσιν προβαλοῦμαι γονάτων, σκοτοῦσθαι προφασίσομαι, τήν κεφαλήν μου ἀπό χολῆς ὀχλεῖσθαι εἴπω, καί τούτου γε ἕνεκα δυνήσομαι εὐλόγως δῆθεν καί ἀπό πρωῒας ἐσθίειν, ἀναθεματίζειν ἄρξομαι καί βλασφημεῖν καί ἐπί πᾶσι τοῖς ἐπιταττομένοις μοι ἀντιλογήσομαι ὁμοῦ καί γογγύσω· καί πάντως περικακήσαντες ἐάσουσί με καί μή βουλόμενοι. Εἰ δέ καί δώσουσί μοι ἔργα τινά εὐτελῆ καί διακονίαν ὡσαύτως ποτέ, καταφρονήσω αὐτῆς. Οἷον, εἰ μέν τοῖς ἡμιόνοις προστάξουσί μοι δουλεύειν, προφασίσομαι μή εἰδέναι τήν δουλείαν αὐτῶν καί ἐάσω αὐτά ἀφιλοκάλητα καί ἀνεπιμέλητα μετά πάντων τῶν στρωμάτων αὐτῶν· καί ἤ ἐάσουσί με ἀναγκασθέντες ἤ ἕτερον δώσουσιν εἰς βοήθειάν μου, κἀκείνου πάσας ἐπιτελοῦντος τάς χρείας, ὀλίγον ἐγώ τι ποιῶν, ἀναπαύομαι. Εἰ δέ ἀρτοποιόν προστάξουσί με γενέσθαι, προμαρτύρομαι μεθ᾿ ὑποκρίσεως, ὡς ἄν μή καταγνωσθῶ ὡς παρήκοος, λέγων αὐτοῖς· "Ἐγώ, πατέρες, οὐδέποτε ἐθεασάμην ἄρτον πῶς γίνεται", καί οὕτως ἀπελθών ποιήσω αὐτοῖς τόν ἄρτον πηλόν, αὐτοί δέ μή ὑποφέροντες τοῦτον φαγεῖν, οὐκέτι με εἰς τήν τοιαύτην καταναγκάσουσι διακονίαν". Εἰ δέ καί εἰς τό μαγειρεῖον διακονεῖν τάξουσιν αὐτόν, οὐκ οἶδε ταπεινωθῆναι τῷ προεστῶτι αὐτοῦ καί βαλεῖν μετάνοιαν, ἀλλά λέγει αὐθαδῶς πρός αὐτόν· "Κύριε ἐλέησον! Πάτερ, ἐκ πάντων μόνον ἐμέ ἐξελέξω εἰς τάς ἀτίμους δουλείας; Οὐκ εἰσί καί ἄλλοι ἐν τῇ μονῇ ἀδελφοί;" καί ταῦτα μέν λέγει, ὥστε παρακρούσασθαι τήν προστασσομένην αὐτῷ διακονίαν· (120) ἐάν δέ ἴδῃ τήν ἔνστασιν τοῦ ἡγουμένου, τέως ἀπέρχεται οὐ διά τόν Θεόν ἀλλά φοβούμενος τήν παιδείαν καί τάς μάστιγας, ἀπερχόμενος δέ καί γογγύζων λέγει ἐν ἑαυτῷ· Τέλεια καί καλά ἔχουσι φαγεῖν ἐξ ὧν μαγειρεύσω ἐγώ! Ἐάν μή ποιήσω αὐτούς νήστεις ἐκ τῆς τραπέζης ἐξαναστῆναι ἤ ἐξεμέσαι ὅσα ἄν φάγωσιν, οὐκ εἰμί ἐγώ!" καί ἁπλῶς οὕτω πάντα ποιεῖ μετά μανίας πολλῆς ὁ ἄθλιος. Καί τήν μέν μαγειρίαν τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὡσαύτως καί τό ὄσπριον αὐτῶν καπνίζει καί παρακαίει αὐτά, ἐμβάλλων πάντα ἄπλυτα καί ἀκαθάριστα εἰς τάς χύτρας, καί ἅλας ἐν αὐτοῖς ὑπέρ τό μέτρον βάλλει ποιῶν ἅλμην αὐτά, τό δέ θερμόν αὐτῶν χλιαρόν εἶναι ἐᾷ ἵνα ἀηδεσθέντες ἐκταραχθῶσιν ἐμέσαι τά βρώματα· ἐάν δέ εἴπῃ αὐτῷ ἀδελφός ἤ καί ἀποστείλῃ τι πρός τό ἑψῆσαι καί εὐτρεπίσαι αὐτό, λέγει ἀναισχύντως· "Οὐ φείδεται; Ἐκέλευσε τίνα κῦρι τόν δοῦλον αὐτοῦ! Οὐά, ἕως τότε μή φάγῃ, ἕως οὗ ἐγώ ἐγγίσω ἤ εὐτρεπίσω αὐτά!". Καί οὕτως ἐπί πᾶσι ποιοῦντος αὐτοῦ, εἰς μόνας ἐκείνας εὑρίσκεται προπηδῶν καί ἐπιτρέχων διακονίας ὁμοῦ καί δουλείας, ἔνθα γινώσκει ὁδόν ἔχειν αὐτόν κλέψαι τι ἤ νοσφίσασθαι· καί ἐάν μή μᾶλλον παρά πάντας προτιμηθῇ, φανερῶς λυπεῖται καί κρυπτῶς πρός τούς ὁμοίους αὐτοῦ καταγογγύζει θλιβόμενος· ὅταν δέ ἐπί τοῖς τοιούτοις ἐπιταγῇ, ὡς ἀπό νεκρῶν καί ὡς ἀπό τοῦ ᾅδου ἐγείρεται καί εὐθύς γάνυται τῷ προσώπῳ καί οἱ ὀφθαλμοί αὐτοῦ χαροποιοί γίνονται. Κἄν ἀπό πολλῆς πονηρίας ὑποκρίνεσθαι βουληθῇ διά τό μή καταγνωσθῆναι, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδ᾿ οὕτω λαθεῖν τούς ὁρῶντας δύναται· ὅταν γάρ ἄλλοθεν οὐδαμόθεν ἀλλ᾿ ἐκ τοῦ μή γογγύσαι ἤ ἀναβαλέσθαι μικρόν, ὡς ἐν πάσαις διακονίαις (121) ποιεῖν ἔθος ἦν αὐτῷ, διαγινώσκεται. Φοβεῖται γάρ ὅλως ἐν ταύτῃ εἰπεῖν τι, ἵνα μή ἄλλος ἀντ᾿ ἐκείνου ἀπολυθῇ καί καταλειφθῇ οὗτος ἄπρακτος.

Τούτων οὖν οὕτως ἐχόντων τῶν ἀμφοτέρων καί τοῦ μέν ὑποτασσομένου ἐν ὑπακοῇ ψυχῆς ἀγαθῆς καί τεταπεινωμένῃ καρδίᾳ ἀόκνως, ἀγογγύστως, ἀδόλως, ἀκλόπως, ἀσκανδαλίστως, τοῦ δέ τά ἐναντία τούτων ποιοῦντος, ὡς γέγραπται, ἐάν
