But also concerning the building of the temple in Judea, which King Solomon built five hundred and sixty-six years after the exodus of the Jews from Egypt, it has been recorded among the Tyrians that the temple was built, and in their archives the records are preserved, in which records the temple is found to have been built one hundred and forty-three years and eight months earlier than the Tyrians founded Carthage; (it was recorded by Hirom by name, king of the Tyrians, son of Abeibalus, because from a paternal friendship Hirom had become a friend of Solomon, and at the same time on account of the surpassing wisdom which Solomon possessed. For they continually tested one another with problems; and a proof of this, they say also that copies of their letters are preserved among the Tyrians to this day; and they sent letters to one another.) —as Menander of Ephesus mentions, writing about the kingdom of the Tyrians, saying thus: "For when Abeibalus," king of the Tyrians, "died, his son Hirom succeeded to the kingdom, who lived fifty-three years and reigned for thirty-four years . And Baleazarus succeeded him, living 43 years, who reigned 17 years. After him, Abdastratus, who lived 29 years reigned 9 years. And after him, Methuastartus, living 54 years, reigned 12 years. And after him his brother Atharymus, living 58 years, reigned 9 years. His brother, Helles by name, slew him, who lived 50 years and reigned eight months. Iuthobalus, a priest of Astarte, slew him, who lived 40 years and reigned 32 years. His son Balezorus succeeded him, who lived 45 years and reigned years. And his son Mettenus, living 32 years, reigned 29 years. Pygmalion succeeded him, who lived 50 years and reigned 47 years. And in the seventh year of his reign his sister, fleeing to Libya, built a city which to this day is called Carchedonia. Therefore the whole time is summed up from the reign of Hirom until the founding of Carthage as 155 years and eight months. And in the twelfth year of the reign of Hirom the temple in Jerusalem was built, so that the whole time has been from the building of the temple until the founding of Carthage 143 years and 8 months." Concerning the testimony then of the Phoenicians and Egyptians, as the authors Manetho the Egyptian and Menander the Ephesian have written history concerning our times, and moreover also Josephus who chronicled the Jewish war waged against them by the Romans, let what has been said be sufficient for us. For from these ancient writers it is shown that the writings of the rest are also more recent than the writings given to us through Moses, and indeed also than those of the prophets in between; for the one who became the later of the prophets, Zacharias by name, flourished during the reign of Darius. But also all the lawgivers are found legislating in between. For if one should mention Solon the Athenian, he lived in the times of the kings Cyrus and Darius, at the time of Zacharias
